Another Formula 1<\/a> race, another race victory for Red Bull<\/a>\u2019s Max Verstappen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The three-time defending champion won the Chinese Grand Prix<\/a> on Sunday starting from pole \u2014 marking his fourth victory in five races this season and his 23rd in the last 27 GPs extending through to last season.<\/p>\n

Only a brake failure last month at the Australian GP in Melbourne likely kept him from sweeping all five.<\/p>\n

Verstappen trailed for only a few laps following a pit stop. <\/p>\n

McLaren's Lando Norris finished about 14 seconds behind Verstappen in second place \u2014 the eighth time he has been No.2 in his career as he still seeks his first race victory. While Verstappen's Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez was third.<\/p>\n

The Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc (fourth) and Carlos Sainz (fifth) rounded out the top five, holding off Mercedes driver George Russell and Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin in sixth and seventh, respectively.<\/p>\n

The rest of the points finishers following on were Oscar Piastri of McLaren, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg in tenth.<\/p>\n

Verstappen now has 110 points to lead the standings followed by Perez (85), Leclerc (76), Sainz (69) and Norris (58).<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt amazing,\u201d Verstappen said afterwards. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll weekend we were incredibly quick and it was just enjoyable to drive. The car was basically on rails and I could do whatever I wanted to with it. Those kinds of weekends are amazing to feel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if this was the most dominant victory of his career, Verstappen was in agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a good one, yeah,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The next race is the Miami GP on May 6 AEST. <\/p>\n

"Completely different track," Verstappen said of claiming another victory. <\/p>\n

\u201cDifferent tyres. Different tarmac. So you never know.\u201d<\/p>\n

The safety car came out twice in the middle of the race at the Shanghai International Circuit.<\/p>\n

The first was after Sauber's Valtteri Bottas stalled at the edge of the track with a blown engine, and again with two nearly simultaneous incidents.<\/p>\n

In one, Kevin Magnussen clipped Yuki Tsunoda, and in the other, Lance Stroll ran into the back of Daniel Ricciardo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Verstappen's rule in F1 also extended to Saturday when he took the inaugural sprint race of the season.<\/p>\n

Verstappen, after winning in Japan two weeks ago, was critical of running a sprint in China. He did not change his opinion on the matter \u2014 despite winning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sprint format was better,\u201d Verstappen said. "But let\u2019s not overdo it as well. We are already doing 24 races, six of these sprint events as well. I get it. I guess it sells better and better numbers. But it\u2019s also more stress on the mechanics.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take it,\u201d Verstappen added. "We have to deal with it. But that\u2019s not a thing now where we need 12 because it will take its toll on people as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was the first F1 race in China since 2019 when the COVID-19 pandemic and China's clampdown wiped out four races. <\/p>\n

Shanghai-born Zhou Guanyu finished 14th for Sauber in what could have been his last opportunity to race at home as teams prepare to shuffle their driver lineups for next season.<\/p>\n

He squatted on the tarmac after the race and covered his face, the crowd thundering, \u201cGuanyu, Guanyu, Guanyu\u201d.<\/p>\n

The real competition in F1 for the rest of the season appears to be for the half-dozen places behind Verstappen and Perez. Mercedes' George Russell called it \u201ca fight\u201d for places No.3 through to No.8.<\/p>\n
