Collingwood<\/a> defender Nathan Murphy, who was medically retired from the game due to ongoing concussion and head trauma issues<\/a>, has confirmed he will take an off field role with the Pies.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old premiership winner was forced to hang up the boots after doctors confirmed he suffered excessive head trauma<\/a> through his 57 AFL games.<\/p>\n

Murphy's final game of his short career was the 2023 grand final, where he suffered a concussion in the first quarter of their thrilling victory after an accidental collision with Brisbane's \ufeffLincoln McCarthy.<\/p>\n

Now Murphy has already been offered an role with the club he retired from just days ago.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The club's been amazing with that, they've offered me a chance to come back in," Murphy told Nine's Sunday Footy Show.<\/em><\/p>\n

"We'll work through what that looks like\ufeff."<\/p>\n

Murphy recognises how lucky he is to find meaningful work he can do around the people and game he loves.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"For me, it's been less than a week and I already miss the boys. I did all this big farewell and I'll be saying hello to them next week\ufeff," he said.<\/p>\n

"I just want to stay around this club, there are so many good people there that I've been so fortunate to meet. I don't want to lose that yet.<\/p>\n

As for what \ufeffthat job could be, Murphy already has his sights set on one area.<\/p>\n

"I love my coaching so it's a good chance for me to develop that as well," Murphy said.<\/p>\n

"The relief probably came when the panel retired me, I think deep down I knew it was the right thing for me," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's been so nice, the amount of celebrations you'd think I'm a 200 game player. It's carried on for a bit and I've carried on for a bit."<\/p>\n

But his retirement has come with a battle he now must face away from footy.<\/p>\n

"There's ongoing headaches, migraines, panic attacks, anxiety. It is pretty full on. It's tough on the people around me," Murphy said.<\/p>\n

"I'm in the best hands. I'm very fortunate in this position where some people aren't."<\/p>\n

Collingwood has also been lauded for their generous act after it was revealed they'll compensate the retiree<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Pies will pay out the remainder of his contract for 2024 and 2025.<\/p>\n

It's a move the club says was done to take pressure off Murphy's decision, with fears that if he had no financial support, he may have considered coming back and risking playing again.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Collingwood was amazing from the start, ever since I went through this process\ufeff, they've really just looked after me as a person," he said.<\/p>\n

"It just allowed me to make a decison based on how I was feeling\ufeff. I didn't have to weigh up all those other factors (financially) because of what they've done for me."<\/p>\n

Murphy is the second player to be medically retired in 2024, following Melbourne premiership star Angus Brayshaw's retirement due to similar head trauma on the eve of the season<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
