Joe Root has piled up a mountain of runs in recent times, but it was with the ball that the England skipper proved heroic early on the second day of the second Test against India<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Root's part-time off-spinners tormented the hosts on at outrageous pitch, as India crumbled from 3-99 at stumps on day one to 145 all out well before lunch on day two at Ahmedabad.<\/p>\n

The 102-Test champion, who finished with career-best figures of 5-8, brought himself on to bowl when India were 5-117 – and he inflicted mayhem from the get-go.<\/p>\n

Rishabh Pant nicked Root's first ball through to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes as the tweaker bagged his first wicket.<\/p>\n

Four overs later he castled Washington Sundar and had Axar Patel caught by Dom Sibley to make his figures 3-0.<\/p>\n

Zak Crawley then caught Ravichandran Ashwin another four overs later as Root set new career-best figures.<\/p>\n

And the 30-year-old then trapped Jasprit Bumrah another four overs later to jag the first five-for of his Test career, slamming India's first innings shut.<\/p>\n

In his 101 Tests before this one, Root had taken 32 wickets at 47.34 and had career-best figures of 4-87.<\/p>\n

He's now become the first England captain to take a five-wicket haul in a Test innings since Bob Willis in 1983.<\/p>\n
