Phil Gould<\/a> has called for the NRL to axe golden point following a thrilling extra-time battle between the Gold Coast Titans<\/a> and the Canberra Raiders<\/a> ended in a heart-breaking loss to the Titans.<\/p>\n

The Raiders claimed the two premiership points with only 10 seconds remaining on the clock, with a field goal by Jamal Fogarty securing the win<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's 100% Footy<\/em>, Gould expressed his disappointment in the NRL's extra time system, saying the game should be complete when the siren sounds at the 80th minute, regardless of the score.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWhat I don't like about it the most… is they get beaten by one-point and they end up with the same premiership points that the team who gives up and gets beaten by 60," the Bulldogs general manager said.<\/p>\n

"I thought the Titans battled really hard (Sunday) night. For 89 minutes and 45 seconds, they were in the game.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI don't like that. They earned a point. They went to 20-all at fulltime, give them a point.<\/p>\n

"What's wrong with \ufeffthat?"<\/p>\n

League great Paul Gallen<\/a> was quick to returns serve at Gould, claiming that the excitement of extra time is great for the fans. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"You know as good as them that we're \ufeffplaying for keeps in this sport. We're not playing for if you get a free point if you draw," Gallen said.<\/p>\n

"We need to create content for the fans out there. It's exciting, it's fun. It's good.<\/p>\n

"The field goals themselves, I think even watching that is fun. But I think if you're bringing in the 10 minutes extra time…"<\/p>\n

Gould replied: "It's not fun."<\/p>\n

"I know it's not fun \ufefffor the losing team," said Gallen.<\/p>\n

"I was on the end of one or two of them as well, but for the fans it's a good part of the game."<\/p>\n

Firing back at Gallen, Gould argued that the "rules go out the window" when the game is taken into extra time resulting in a lose-lose situation.<\/p>\n

"All the rules go out the window in \ufeffthe last 10 minutes, Gal," he said.<\/p>\n

Gallen responded: "Tell the referees\ufeff… that's the referees' fault."<\/p>\n

"And then they'll blame the referees for deciding the game on a penalty. \ufeffThey are in a no-win situation," Gould argued.<\/p>\n

"So you're saying 80 minutes draw, game-over. One point each?," the former Blues captain asked.<\/p>\n
