BBC correspondent Jonathan Agnew has slammed the use of gender neutral terms in the game of cricket<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Agnew, who is departing his role later this year,\ufeff expressed his disappointment at the use of words such as "batter" instead of "batsman" in commentary and around the cricketing world.<\/p>\n

The changes to the terminology came back in 2021, when Marylebone Cricket Club replaced "batsman" with "batter".<\/p>\n

The MCC, who guard the game's rules, declared the change was made to keep up with the growth of cricket for both men and women.\ufeff<\/p>\n

However, Agnew says he's had enough\ufeff of feeling like he can't use the terms he has grown up with for men's cricket.<\/p>\n

"I just think it's sad," Agnew told The Sunday Times.<\/p>\n

"Inclusivity's great, but come on. I hate 'batter'."<\/p>\n

"I always call a woman batsman a 'batter'. But why can't a man playing a man's game be a batsman?"<\/p>\n

Agnew also\ufeff discussed his thoughts on the Ashes, questioning why the trophy, battled for by England and Australia's men's sides since 1882, is also awarded to the women.<\/p>\n

The Women's Ashes have been around since 1998, with Agnew saying \ufeff<\/p>\n

"That doesn't mean to say that the Ashes has to be the 'men's Ashes'," said Agnew.<\/p>\n

"People will call me an old fart, I suppose \u2026 It's an event. It happened. It's not the 'Men's Battle of Hastings', is it?"<\/p>\n

Meantime, England bowler Kate Cross slammed the suggestion that the term "batsman" should be reintroduced, fearing it could isolate women who are keen to enter the sport.<\/p>\n

"It is just a word, of course. But it is a word which could potentially put a young girl off the sport because she feels like the door isn't open for her," Cross told The Cricketer.\ufeff<\/p>\n
