Geelong great Jimmy Bartel<\/a> was full of praise for Hawthorn<\/a> coach Sam Mitchell<\/a>'s scathing response following the Hawks' horror showing against the Suns on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Hawthorn's 53-point loss extended the side's winless streak to five games in 2024 \u2014 marking \ufeffthe club's worst start to a season since 1970.<\/p>\n

Speaking post-match, \ufeffMitchell was highly critical of his side's performance, labelling the effort "as bad as we've played in a long time".<\/p>\n

"You're just not going to be able to compete against anyone, the way we played tonight. And that's a completely unacceptable way to play, and we should be past games like that," he told media.<\/p>\n

"That's as bad as we've played in a long time.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"We had a chat with the players around the standard that we hold ourselves to … I don't know how many players would say they are in good form for us at the moment."<\/p>\n

Bartel was a big fan of Mitchell's searing spray.<\/p>\n

"I love that from Sam Mitchell," he told Nine's Footy Furnace<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

"That's clear, concise\ufeff, [and coveys] what you need to be doing.<\/p>\n

\"Jack<\/p>\n

"You're on notice if you're a Hawthorn player."<\/p>\n

The Hawks struggled to contest the ball\ufeff, particularly in the second half, crumbling under the Suns' pressure.<\/p>\n

Bartel compared Mitchell's remarks to the approach of his former coach at the Cats, Mark "Bomber" Thompson.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffHe'd always say, 'We might lose a couple tonight but we're going to prepare you to play big games and big moments because you turned your toes up, really'," Bartel said.<\/p>\n

"'You couldn't get the footy, you got beaten, you didn't do enough to actually try to turn the tide, so, come with your mouthguards'."<\/p>\n
