She admits the experience in question, during and after the women's marathon<\/a> at last year's world athletics<\/a> championships in Budapest, was "traumatic".<\/p>\n

The Adelaide product will be running a far shorter distance, and in far more comfortable conditions, when she races the 5000m at the Australian athletics titles in her home city on Sunday.<\/p>\n

"For Budapest I was probably a little bit new and naive to it all, and coming from an Australian winter it was quite a challenge," Batt-Doyle recalls in an interview with Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately for Budapest I had a chest infection and the flu in the month before, and I went into it a little bit underdone in my training and probably not in my best state of being\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"It was a really tough experience. I was in the medical tent for a couple of hours afterwards, I had an ECG, I had all the things."<\/p>\n

The temperature climbed to 27 degrees as Batt-Doyle struggled to the finish line in two hours, 37 minutes and 53 seconds (2:37:53).<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old was hooked up to ECG wires because medical workers in the tent realised her heart beat was irregular.<\/p>\n

She says she'll base herself in Europe from May to acclimatise to the northern hemisphere summer, regardless of which Olympic<\/a> event she might be picked for.<\/p>\n

"It was a really tough day [in Budapest], but as hard as it was, as unenjoyable as the whole experience was, as traumatic as it was, ending up in the medical tent \u2014 I couldn't run for a week, I couldn't walk for a couple of days \u2014 I really took away a lot of learnings from that race, not only physically but mentally," Batt-Doyle says.<\/p>\n

"That experience helped me then get my marathon PB [personal best] down in December, and I also feel like it will help me a lot come Paris if I am selected for the marathon.<\/p>\n

"When I put the green and gold on and I run for Australia, I'm not going to give up until someone scrapes me off, so I would have had to collapse to not make it to the finish."<\/p>\n

Batt-Doyle smashed the 2:26:50 Olympic marathon qualifying time a few months after her Budapest run, powering through December's Valencia Marathon in 2:23:27.<\/p>\n

However, she's not guaranteed a spot on the Olympic marathon team; six Aussies, Batt-Doyle included, have nailed the entry standard, but only three spots are available.\ufeff<\/p>\n

That's why Batt-Doyle, who\ufeff contested the 5000m at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, has returned to the 12.5-lap event. She's trying to knock off the 5000m entry standard, 14:52.00, in the case of needing a back-up avenue to reach Paris<\/a>. Her personal best is 14:59.18, set at Melbourne's Maurie Plant Meet in February<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"Being qualified in the marathon is a good starting point, but it's very competitive now [for selection] … I feel like I've put my best foot forward in the marathon, and we'll see what happens with the selections at the end of April," Batt-Doyle says.<\/p>\n

"For now I'm just focusing on the track and I'm really enjoying getting back on the track."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
