North Melbourne<\/a> coach Alastair Clarkson<\/a> says he would be "delighted" if disgraced former Kangaroos midfielder Tarryn Thomas is thrown a career lifeline by a rival club<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On the eve of the 2024 season, the Kangaroos axed the troubled player after he was initially suspended by the league for 18 matches\ufeff<\/a> for alleged inappropriate behaviour.<\/p>\n

Thomas spent much of the 2023 season also bouncing from controversy to controversy.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Clarkson's comments follow Cats list manager Andrew Mackie's suggestion that Geelong would keep the door ajar for the troubled star.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mackie explained the Cats will always look at players that have experienced "bumpy" careers, to see if they could be a better fit at their club.<\/p>\n

\"North<\/p>\n

"At times if you want to be in the market for players that are really talented and have that skill set, often if they become available to you, it means that something has been a little bit bumpy for them along the way\ufeff," Mackie said on SEN Radio.<\/p>\n

Kane Cornes also linked the 23-year-old to Geelong.<\/p>\n

"I'd be surprised if that phone call hasn't been made (from the Cats to Thomas)\ufeff," Cornes said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Monday.<\/p>\n

Following those comments, \ufeffGeelong<\/a> coach Chris Scott<\/a> declared his side was "open" to recruiting players from other clubs.<\/p>\n

Clarkson says he wouldn't be surprised if the midfielder, who played 66 games for the Kangaroos, landed at another club.<\/p>\n

"No, not at all. Tarryn and the AFL and his management need to work through whatever protocols he needs to go through for him to become available to play AFL footy," Clarkson said.<\/p>\n

"But it was never in any doubt for me that was going to be something he'd be able to achieve.<\/p>\n

\"Tarryn<\/p>\n

"We're excited if he gets that opportunity, whether it's Geelong or any other club…<\/p>\n

"The whole goal of this is to try and give all men and women right across the country (to play footy).<\/p>\n

"They've got a passion to play our game, how can we assist with giving them that opportunity?<\/p>\n

\"Geelong<\/p>\n

"If he can do the things necessary to get himself right to put himself in that space again, then we're delighted he's going to get the chance."\ufeff<\/p>\n

But with Thomas' name now on rivals' lips,\ufeff Clarkson was quick to shut down any suggestions that his club would welcome him back to Arden Street.<\/p>\n

"We tried our best to make it work. It didn't work for a whole heap of reasons. Whatever happens from here is up to Tarryn and whatever footy club wants to take him on-board and give him that opportunity," he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
