The agent of\ufeff Australian 100m record holder Torrie Lewis has revealed why the rising star is not running the event at the national athletics<\/a> titles in Adelaide this weekend, amid confusion and disappointment regarding the decision behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old was absent from the 100m heats on Friday afternoon, having decided to drop the event and only race the 200m, her specialty, at SA Athletics Stadium.<\/p>\n

Wide World of Sports is aware of multiple prominent figures at SA Athletics Stadium who are either baffled or unhappy, or both, that she opted out of the 100m.<\/p>\n

Her agent, veteran Australian athletics guru Nic Bideau\ufeff, explained to Wide World of Sports trackside that world rankings and her Olympic<\/a> plans were key to the decision.<\/p>\n

"The preferred event for Torrie if she's able to make it to the Olympic Games … is the 200m, and she's no\ufefft on the 200m rankings at the moment because she hasn't run enough 200s … She hopes to run two good 200s here on the weekend and win here. Then she'll have another one in China next week in the Diamond League and by then she should be on the ranking list," Bideau told WWOS.<\/p>\n

"She's going to learn a lot more about herself if she runs a faster 200m time than she ever has. If she won the 100m [at the national titles] it doesn't really change much with the situation she's in, whereas if she comes out and runs 22.60 or 22.70 in the 200m here on Sunday [in the final], that will change her prospects a lot.<\/p>\n

"It's great being the national record holder [in the 100m\ufeff], but it's an Olympic Games and the girl wants to do as well as she can in the Olympic Games, so that's what we're focused on.<\/p>\n

"She's only new to the sport at this level, she's going to be around for 10 years or so, you don't need to do it all at once."<\/p>\n

Even if Lewis meets the Paris 2024<\/a> qualifying times in the 100m and 200m, it's likely she will only race the 200m in France, Bideau said, before running both at the world junior championships in Colombia in August.<\/p>\n

Lewis is also hoping to run the 4x100m relay in Paris.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Bideau told Lewis on Thursday night that what she wanted to\ufeff run at the national titles was entirely up to her and Andrew Iselin, her coach.<\/p>\n

Lewis has 100m and 200m personal bests of 11.10 seconds and 23.02 respectively. The Paris 2024 entry standards are 11.07 and 22.57.<\/p>\n

There are several factors why Lewis is better at the 200m than the 100, Bideau explained.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I don't think she's got her start going just yet [in the 100m]," said Bideau, who coached Cathy Freeman to 400m Olympic gold in Sydney.<\/p>\n

"I actually think her natural ability is more suited to the longer sprints. If you watch her 100m, where she does the damage is in the second half, and she's got twice as far to do it in the 200m.<\/p>\n

"And I think she's actually a better starter on the curve than she is on the straight."<\/p>\n

Lewis broke the national 100m record in Canberra in January<\/a>, eclipsing the mark set by Melissa Breen just under 10 years earlier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
