Melbourne<\/a> legend Cameron Smith<\/a> took a cheeky dig at his former coach amid rumours linking Craig Bellamy<\/a> to the soon-to-be-vacant South Sydney<\/a> job.<\/p>\n

Reports claim Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetriou<\/a> is on borrowed time at Redfern, and could be sacked as early as next week.<\/p>\n

The speculation will only intensify after a bizarre 27-second press conference on Friday<\/a> in which Demetriou refused to answer questions about his future at the club.<\/p>\n

Some believe he is coaching for his job against the Sharks on Saturday, while others say he is already a dead man walking.<\/p>\n

Either way, the rugby league rumour mill has been busy this week speculating on possible replacements if – or when – Demetriou is axed.<\/p>\n

\ufeffOne of the candidates is Bellamy – the 64-year-old who's been in charge of the Storm for two decades, leading the club to three legitimate premierships and two other grand final victories that were later stripped.<\/p>\n

When asked about the Rabbitohs job this week Bellamy replied "never say never", although conceded it was unlikely.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Smith – Melbourne's greatest ever player – could only laugh at the South Sydney links to his former coach.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffCraig, are you still awake? He's probably not still awake," Smith said on Nine's Thursday broadcast with a smile, with the clock ticking over 10.30pm.<\/p>\n

"What are you talking about?\ufeff He's talking rubbish, what is he talking about.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffHe's got like a 38-year deal at the Storm, he's not going anywhere.<\/p>\n

\"Cameron<\/p>\n

"Put a line through Craig Bellamy for starters."<\/p>\n

The other leading candidate to \ufeffcoach the Bunnies is Wayne Bennett, who led the club to the NRL grand final in 2021 only to fall short against Penrith.<\/p>\n

Bennett's time as coach of the Dolphins is coming to an end and he will no doubt have several offers for work next year.<\/p>\n

League great Paul Gallen, though, believes it's premature to discuss replacements for Demetriou.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"He's still got a job, the coach has still got a job at the moment, so we've got to be a bit respectful," Gallen said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

"They shouldn't be rushing the decision just yet, they've got the ability to turn this around."\ufeff<\/p>\n
