Newcastle Knights<\/a> coach Adam O'Brien<\/a> has expressed his frustration at a double standard in the refereeing after his side's nail-biting loss to the Sydney Roosters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBooing from the Knights fans was heard loud and clear at McDonald Jones Stadium as the Roosters managed to avoid being penalised on multiple occasions in the final set.<\/p>\n

Knights fullback Kalyn Ponga<\/a> broke through the Roosters defence before he was chased down as Angus Crichton held him down in the play the ball.<\/p>\n

"That's close to a penalty isn't it?" commentator Mat Thompson said on Nine's coverage as the boos began.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThen three tackles later, Dane Gagai expressed his frustration with also being held down in a tackle.<\/p>\n

\ufeffNewcastle couldn't find the a try in the following two plays, despite a big chance for Adam Elliott who had no one coming through in support.<\/p>\n

"Where's the support play?" Knights legend Andrew Johns said.<\/p>\n

Boos from the crowd then sounded around the ground after the full-time whistle as the Roosters won 22-20.<\/p>\n

Footage then showed O'Brien's frustration in the final set, punching the desk at one stage.<\/p>\n

The coach sympathised with the fans post-match. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThese fans, they know footy," he said in his press conference.<\/p>\n

"I don't think I've ever heard a stadium so frustrated, never heard booing like that at the end of a game so there must be something in it."<\/p>\n

O'Brien then conceded he believed the officiating around the ruck was a "theme" throughout the match.<\/p>\n

"Obviously the Kalyn \ufeffone at the end, you'd like to think that's a professional foul, sin bin and we kick the goal but whingeing about this tonight's not going to help anyone, it doesn't help these guys," he said.<\/p>\n

"There was some stuff that we needed to do better, some stuff I needed to do better.<\/p>\n

"I think I got the interchanges wrong in the first half. It's not all that but we've got a really disappointed dressing room that fought bloody hard tonight."<\/p>\n

Knights co-captain Jayden Brailey conceded he felt there was a definite difference. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"It felt very quick when they had the ball, that's for sure," he said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI thought our boys were fighting very hard to get some ruck speed, obviously you're not going to get every one."<\/p>\n

O'Brien then added: "It just felt like there was two different standards there".<\/p>\n

Immediately after the game, Roosters hooker Brandon Smith cheekily admitted his side got away with not conceding a penalty.<\/p>\n

"I thought Kalyn was going to be the hero of the night \ufeffdown that try line but thankfully we scrambled. We probably got away with a little penalty at the end holding him down too long," he laughed.<\/p>\n
