Phil Gould<\/a> doubts Wayne Bennett<\/a> will come to South Sydney's rescue amid the Redfern-based club's unexpected slump as the master coach \ufeffremained non-committal about his future during a press conference on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Souths coach Jason Demetriou is reportedly on borrowed time<\/a> amid the Rabbitohs' shock start to the year which sees them anchored at the bottom of the NRL ladder after five weeks.<\/p>\n

Media reports have swirled about Demetriou's job status at Souths<\/a>, with some even suggesting\ufeff Mal Meninga as a potential caretaker coach for the remainder of the year if Demetriou is let go, with Bennett subsequently linked with a return to the team from 2025.<\/p>\n

However, Gould poured cold water on a potential reunion\ufeff on his Six Tackles with Gus<\/em><\/a> p<\/em>odcast, saying it's a "zillion to one" chance.<\/p>\n

"I just don't think he'll backtrack. I don't think he'll do it. I might be wrong. Wayne Bennett takes on all sorts of roles and he's prepared to put his jersey in the line anywhere," the Bulldogs boss said.<\/p>\n

"I would think with the game looking into expansion with an 18th team, a 19th and a 20th team, he's pretty close to (ALRC chairman) Peter V'Landys.<\/p>\n

"He could have him earmarked for a reconnaissance to see where the next franchise comes from and whether he can assist with that.<\/p>\n

"I don't really think Wayne Bennett wants to leave Queensland at the moment but only he could answer that, but I have no reason to say that, I have no inside information."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Bennett has a long association with the embattled Demetriou, having brought him under his wing as an assistant in 2017 and then onto South Sydney when he left the Broncos a year later.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Bennett said\ufeff Demetriou is "a good coach" and that clubs need to be more accountable when things go south.<\/p>\n

"I have no idea what is going on at Souths, other than what I hear," Bennett said.<\/p>\n

"I know Jason is a good coach and something has gone amiss. That is their problem and they will have to sort it out.<\/p>\n

"The coach takes all of the responsibility and the club takes none. That is the tragedy of all this stuff.<\/p>\n

"That is the job we take on. We know that is our life and we also know it can go pear shaped very quickly and that is what has happened there."<\/p>\n

Bennett led \ufeffSouths to a 2021 grand final and two preliminary finals, and is viewed as the type of character that can handle some of the bigger personalities in the team that have come under criticism.<\/p>\n

The 74-year-old will leave his job with the Dolphins at the end of 2024 and said he has not considered what his next move may be, despite reports linking him to Souths and Parramatta.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I am here until the end of the season and I have made no decisions about going anywhere or doing anything so we will wait and see," Bennett added.<\/p>\n

"Everyone is having an opinion on it. My opinion is the one that matters but I'm not sharing it with anyone, so keep guessing guys.<\/p>\n

"Don't try and predict the future. That's the only tip I'm giving you.<\/p>\n

"I'll see what I want to do and what's happening in my life. I could still be here next year. Who knows?"<\/p>\n

When asked about a potential move to Sydney's west to lead the Eels, Bennett said:, "I haven't even walked past the ground.<\/p>\n

"I have got a fair idea about what I have done in my life. You need to go and read another book and see what that one says because Wayne Bennett has never been near the Eels in his coaching career.<\/p>\n

"I loved Jack Gibson and Ron Massey, both wonderful men. They were big influences on my life and my coaching life but that doesn't mean that is going to get me to the Eels."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
