Alexei Popyrin<\/a> set up an all-Australian round of 16 clash Alex De Minaur<\/a> at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo<\/a>, following one of the biggest wins of his career.<\/p>\n

Popyrin, 24,\ufeff upset world No.6 and defending champion Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-4 in the second round and became the the first Aussie in 45 years to score a win over a top-10 opponent in Monte Carlo, with John Alexander the last to do it in 1979.<\/p>\n

Rublev dropped his serve three times in the encounter, which was Popyrin's sixth career win over a top-10 player.<\/p>\n

"(I'm) happy to beat a guy who was in form, confident and the defending champ. It was an awesome match," Popyrin said.<\/p>\n

"He is probably the best player from the baseline when you give him rhythm, so I tried to change the pace, height and spin and I think it worked really well for me today."<\/p>\n

Number 46 ranked Popyrin\ufeff will now face fellow Aussie and 11th seed De Minaur, who advanced with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win against world No.26 Tallon Griekspoor.<\/p>\n

Popyrin and De Minaur\ufeff are the first Australians to reach the third round at Monte Carlo since Lleyton Hewitt and Wayne Arthurs in 2004.<\/p>\n

The career head-to-head between them is 1-1 after Popyrin won at the Paris Masters in 2021.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Either way Australia\ufeff will have a participant in the quarter-finals for the first time since Mark Philippoussis in 1999.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
