T\ufeffhe Masters<\/a> preparation for Australia's top trophy hopes couldn't have gone much worse.<\/p>\n

Rising superstar Min Woo Lee earlier this week revealed he broke one of his fingers<\/a> in a gym accident last Sunday.<\/p>\n

And now Cameron Smith<\/a> has lifted the lid on a mystery illness that forced him to withdraw from LIV Miami only a week before he was due to tee it up at Augusta National.<\/p>\n

\ufeffSmith – the 2022 British Open champion – came down with what he thought was food poisoning on the Wednesday night before the tournament.<\/p>\n

He skipped the following day's pro-am and then played round one on the Friday, before opting to sit out the remainder of the event.<\/p>\n

It was his first tournament since being runner-up in Hong Kong almost a month earlier, leaving his preparation for a green jacket pursuit in tatters.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"A bit of food poisoning at the start of last week and probably just tried to do a little bit too much and body just kind of shut down on me," Smith told media ahead of the Masters.<\/p>\n

"Spent the weekend in the bed, which wasn't the greatest preparation, but I was just saying that today is probably the first day where I feel like I've got a little bit of energy.<\/p>\n

"I'm sure I'll be pretty cooked tonight. At least I could get around and feel OK.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I think here more than most places if you get behind the eight-ball, you're pretty screwed pretty early. It definitely doesn't make it any easier."<\/p>\n

He later told Golf Digest he had doubts it was food poisoning.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Smith played a practice round at Augusta on Tuesday (AEDT) alongside fellow Aussies Lee, Adam Scott, and Jason Day.<\/p>\n

Of the four of them, young gun Lee is the only one still waiting to win his first major.<\/p>\n

He will tee it up at Augusta despite breaking a bone in the tip of his right ring finger last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They are joined by Cam Davis and amateur Jasper Stubbs as the six Australians making a charge for the famous green jacket this week.<\/p>\n

Aside from Scott – who won the Masters in 2013 – Smith has enjoyed the most success in golf's flagship event.<\/p>\n

He's recorded four top-10 finishes at Augusta in the past six years, including runner-up in 2020 and tying for third in 2022 when he was run down in the fourth round by Scottie Scheffler.<\/p>\n
