L\ufeffeague legend Brad Fittler<\/a> believes Latrell Mitchell<\/a>'s drop in form can be attributed in part to the Las Vegas racism scandal earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Mitchell went into bat for Broncos<\/a> youngster Ezra Mam<\/a> after he was called a "monkey" by Roosters<\/a> prop Spencer Leniu in round one.<\/p>\n

Leniu faced an NRL judiciary hearing eight days after the fact and was suspended for eight games for the racist slur.<\/p>\n

But in the week following the Vegas incident, Mitchell went toe to toe with the NRL as well as Aussie sporting great Anthony Mundine via social media.<\/p>\n

In various Instagram posts he said the NRL "better deal with this shit"\ufeff and called for Leniu to miss more than 12 weeks, and then engaged in a back-and-forth with Mundine<\/a> after the latter claimed Leniu's comment was not racism.<\/p>\n

While the NRL chose not to punish Mitchell officially, ARLC chairman Peter V'landys clipped the Rabbitohs superstar for trying to influence a judicary outcome<\/a> before the hearing.<\/p>\n

\ufeffSince that saga Mitchell has been criticised for giving a foul-mouthed interview to Triple M<\/a>, then for diving into the head of his close friend Josh Addo-Carr and knocking him out<\/a> on Good Friday, and has now been banned for three games for driving his elbow into the head of Shaun Johnson<\/a> in round five.<\/p>\n

"It started this year after Las Vegas," Fittler told Wide World of Sports' Freddy and the Eighth<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"They got beat over there (by Manly) and it really amplified from there.<\/p>\n

"He's been held out there as one of the Indigenous leaders and that takes a lot, I'm sure, of your energy.<\/p>\n

"That's what happens when you start delving into social media, playing a bit of your life out on the social platforms. It takes a lot of your life.<\/p>\n

"He doesn't have to touch his social media – people understand his position with the Indigenous fight, and the more and the better he plays football, the better his message is always going to be."<\/p>\n

Mitchell was called into a meeting with South Sydney bosses on Tuesday where he was reportedly grilled about his attitude and intentions of late.<\/p>\n

League icon Phil Gould on Monday \ufeffquestioned Mitchell's love for the game<\/a>, and suggested the 26-year-old may suddenly retire from the NRL to focus on his farm in Taree.<\/p>\n

Sydney Morning Herald journalist Michael Chammas says Mitchell has assured those close to him that he intends to continue honouring his $1 million-a-year contract.<\/p>\n

"I think he's rattled," Chammas told Freddy and the Eighth<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I don't think he's in a good space, and I don't think he's handled it the way he should have handled it.<\/p>\n

"He's a guy crying out for help and I don't know if he's handling it the right way.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Andrew Johns believes Mitchell's form had dropped off long before the trip to Vegas.<\/p>\n

"Since probably the middle of last year… they were leading (the ladder) and Latrell was on fire," Johns said.<\/p>\n

"But since then, for some reason, Latrell's form has gone down and South Sydney's has gone with it.<\/p>\n

"Since then it looks like his mind is elsewhere. He looked angry on the weekend. (Is it) a cry for help?\ufeff"<\/p>\n
