The AFL Players Association has expressed "fundamental concerns"\ufeff about the sanction handed to Port Adelaide's Jeremy Finalyson for using a homophobic slur<\/a> during a match, comparing it to the punishment of officials for similar incidents.<\/p>\n

Finalyson has been handed a three-week ban for using a slur during the Power's 69-point win over the Bombers on Saturday night at Adelaide Oval<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It came after the forward's words were picked up on an umpire microphone during the match, with Finlayson admitting to his fault at three-quarter time of the match.<\/p>\n

Finlayson and the Power released statements in the days following the incident, before the AFL confirmed the punishment on Wednesday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The ban comes just a few months after the AFL decided against suspending North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson<\/a> after he used a homophobic slur against St Kilda's \ufeffJimmy Webster in a pre season match<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Clarkson was handed a suspended sentence and $20,000 fine after using a slur against Webster, who was banned for seven weeks for a bump on North Melbourne's Jy Simpkin.\ufeff<\/p>\n

AFLPA CEO Paul Marsh said the association accepted the punishment, but held concerns over the way Finlayson's case was managed in comparison to other similar ones surrounding AFL officials.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Jeremy's words were unacceptable, hurtful, and have no place in the game or society. We acknowledge the impact these situations have and support the opportunity for further education, understanding and behavioural change, along with an appropriate sanction," Marsh said in an AFLPA statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"However, we have fundamental concerns about this and historical AFL outcomes that result in discrepancies when sanctioning players in comparison to officials.<\/p>\n

"We believe the AFL is consistently inconsistent and there are double standards in its approach to dealing with players compared to others on behavioural matters."<\/p>\n

Marsh has called on the AFL to rethink how they handle similar situations going forward, urging them to drop their "double standards".\ufeff<\/p>\n

"This issue highlights the lack of clarity on how the AFL handles these situations and we want this to be the catalyst for an urgent review of the sanctioning framework," he said.<\/p>\n

"If this type of conduct is a three-week sanction for a player, it should be for everyone involved in the game and this should be clear to everyone in the industry upfront rather than the open-ended approach that is currently in place.<\/p>\n

There has also been confirmation that the AFLPA has already reached out to AFL CEO Andrew Dillon for clarification and a "review" of current practices.\ufeff<\/p>\n
