Eddie McGuire believes the AFL will punish players and officials who use homophobic slurs with an even bigger ban than Port Adelaide's Jeremy Finlayson received on Wednesday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finalyson was handed a three-week ban for using a slur during the Power's 69-point win over the Bombers on Saturday night at Adelaide Oval<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The forward's words were picked up on an umpire microphone during the game, with Finlayson admitting to his fault at three-quarter time of the match.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeffSince Finlayson's punishment was confirmed, there has been uproar that North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson's punishment for a similar act during the pre season was not harsh enough.<\/p>\n

The AFL Players Association expressed "fundamental concerns" in Finlayson's suspension, compared to other officials' similar acts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Six weeks ago, the AFL decided against suspending Clarkson<\/a> for his homophobic slur against St Kilda's \ufeffJimmy Webster<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Clarkson was handed a suspended sentence and $20,000 fine for the slur against Webster, who was banned for seven weeks for a bump on North Melbourne's Jy Simpkin.\ufeff<\/p>\n

McGuire believes the AFL will continue to increase the punishment if it occurs beyond Finlayson's act in Gather Round.<\/p>\n

"I can confirm … that it will have a six-plus (week ban) next time up … and it will go up until it stops," McGuire said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

"They've decided now that's it, everyone should get the message on three (week ban) and all the incidents around Finlayson."<\/p>\n

McGuire explained how \ufeffthe league viewed Clarkson's act compared to Finlayson's against an unnamed Essendon player at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

"They're (inside the AFL) saying that Clarkson \ufeffwas provoked, no one (from St Kilda) complained about it. What we're finding out is when the Essendon players were interviewed by the AFL investigation officer, they were upset (about Finlayson's comment)," he said.<\/p>\n

"They thought it was way out of line and that strengthened the armour of the AFL, that this is where people are on this issue."<\/p>\n

McGuire\ufeff says Finlayson's act has opened up wounds for women's footballers as well.<\/p>\n

"There is a bit of a worry now about where this starts and finishes, particularly in women's football … where there's a lot more outwardly homosexual people involved," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"The easy way is, just don't."<\/p>\n

Matthew Lloyd says he is hoping the AFL admits the punishment of Clarkson was not harsh enough.<\/p>\n

"The benchmark has been set now," he said.<\/p>\n

"But, I would feel far more comfortable if we hear from an AFL spokesman in the next 24 hours, to say 'we got the Alastair Clarkson one (punishment) wrong, we weren't hard enough in this situation', to justify to me, why Jeremy Finlayson received three rounds\ufeff."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
