Former North Melbourne player Danielle Laidley is desperate to educate Australian Rules players and officials at all level about how inappropriate slurs can cause harm to the LGBTQIA+ community.<\/p>\n

Laidley spoke out after Port Adelaide's Jeremy Finlayson was handed a three-match ban for using a homophobic slur<\/a> during his side's 69-point win over Essendon on Saturday night.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Finlayson told the club of his comment at three-quarter time of the match, with the club releasing a statement on Saturday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"A contrite Finlayson made the club aware during the three-quarter time break and apologised to the victim on [the] field after the final siren last night," the statement read.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, the forward also \ufeffreleased a statement.<\/p>\n

"The word I used is very unacceptable in the game of football. We need to stamp it out and I'm very remorseful," Finlayson said in a statement.<\/p>\n

"I knew straight away that it was not acceptable and I take full responsibility."<\/p>\n

Now, Laidley has urged the league to continue to stay on top of homophobic behaviour in order to protect those vulnerable in the game, like she previously was.<\/p>\n

"What we don't want in the AFL is another Danielle Laidley car crash, where you're anxiety (ridden) and you get depressed and you self sabotage," Laidley exclusively told 9News Melbourne on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\"Danielle<\/p>\n

"It's a slow-moving beast. We all need to be a little patient, but we also need to understand that this type of thing in this day and age is not acceptable."<\/p>\n

Laidley's message has been echoed around the nation.<\/p>\n

"The ripple effects of this type of poison and venemous language is exactly the same as a-word or the n-word," Ange Greene from Stand Up Events told 9News Melbourne.<\/p>\n

"This isn't just (Alastair) Clarkson or Jeremy (Finlayson)\ufeff. This is prevalent within the AFL culture in general."<\/p>\n

It comes after the AFL Players Association expressed "fundamental concerns"\ufeff about the Finlayson's sanction<\/a>, comparing it to the punishment of officials for similar incidents.<\/p>\n

"We believe the AFL is consistently inconsistent and there are double standards in its approach to dealing with players compared to others on behavioural matters," AFLPA CEO Paul Marsh said via a statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Marsh has called on the AFL to rethink how they handle similar situations going forward, urging them to drop their "double standards".\ufeff<\/p>\n

"This issue highlights the lack of clarity on how the AFL handles these situations and we want this to be the catalyst for an urgent review of the sanctioning framework," he said.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
