Port Adelaide's Jeremy Finlayson has been banned for three AFL games for his homophobic slur<\/a> against an Essendon opponent last weekend.<\/p>\n

The AFL<\/a> on Wednesday found \ufeffFinlayson guilty of "conduct unbecoming" in Gather Round and said his language was "unprompted and highly offensive."<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old will now attend \ufeff"appropriate Pride in Sport training" and pay for it himself.<\/p>\n

The AFL said Finlayson would have been slapped with a longer ban if he hadn't shown as much contrition as he had.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Everyone, including Jeremy understands the word he used is both hurtful and totally unacceptable in any setting, ever," AFL general counsel Stephen Meade said.<\/p>\n

"The AFL is very clear that homophobia has no place in our game, nor in society. We want all people in LGBTQI+ communities to feel safe playing or attending our games and we know the incident that happened on the weekend does not assist this goal.<\/p>\n

"As a code we will continue to work together to improve our game as a safe and inclusive environment for all.<\/p>\n

"The AFL will continue to consider the specific circumstances in each incident in determining appropriate responses.<\/p>\n
