M\ufeffelbourne Demons<\/a> forward Kysaiah Pickett has had his one-match ban upheld after losing his appeal at the AFL tribunal<\/a> on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

The outcome marks the 22-year-old's third suspension in the space of 18 months.<\/p>\n

Pickett was initially slapped with a one-match suspension for rough conduct<\/a> after collecting Crows<\/a> midfielder Jake Soligo late during the second quarter of the Demons' 15-point win on Thursday night<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Match review officer Michael Christian deemed Pickett's hit to be careless conduct with medium impact and high contact.<\/p>\n

Pickett left the ground \u2014 his upper arm making late contact with Soligo's head after he had disposed of the ball.<\/p>\n

Soligo did not play out the rest of the match.<\/p>\n

Melbourne petitioned to free Pickett, arguing he braced for impact but did not bump Soligo.<\/p>\n

Pickett pleaded guilty to engaging in rough conduct but appealed for the offence to be graded as low impact not medium.<\/p>\n

The tribunal ultimately upheld the medium impact classification and provided several reasons for the decision based on Pickett's action in the air.<\/p>\n

Pickett provided a written statement to the tribunal claiming he solely left the ground to "intercept the ball".<\/p>\n

"My intention was to catch the ball. I collided with Soligo and then followed the ball to make the next contest until the umpire blew the whistle," he wrote<\/p>\n

"I had no intention of bumping Soligo, I was trying to intercept the ball in the air."<\/p>\n

As Pickett was bracing when he made contact with Soligo, Melbourne's lawyer Adrian Anderson argued that the same impact grade applied to high bumps and smothers should not be applied in this case.<\/p>\n

The \ufeff"high bumps issue" was discounted by the AFL's representative Lisa Hannon as the Demons were campaigning for the impact grading to be downgraded.<\/p>\n

The Demons attempted to bring in \ufeffProfessor Cole to provide expert evidence, however, the tribunal ruled that the evidence would not be heard as it would not impact the Demons' challenge of the impact grading.<\/p>\n

Tribunal chair Jeff Gleeson said he was "troubled" by Melbourne's argument.<\/p>\n

Anderson then asked to speak with the Demons offline before a seven-minute break ensued.<\/p>\n

He then argued that Pickett decelerated as he jumped, which resulted in "a much less significant impact."<\/p>\n

After 30 minutes of deliberations, a verdict was reached.<\/p>\n

As a result, Pickett will miss Melbourne's round-five match against Brisbane.<\/p>\n

The small forward was previously suspended for two weeks following a rough conduct charge against Western Bulldogs midfielder Bailey Smith in round one last year.<\/p>\n

He also sat out this year's Opening Round because of a one-week ban for rough conduct after an incident with Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps during last year's semi-final encounter. Pickett was also fined for striking in that same game.<\/p>\n

The tribunal's decision followed failed head-high contact appeals to Richmond's Liam Baker and St Kilda's Max King<\/a>, as well as Essendon forward Peter Wright's four-game ban<\/a> for careless conduct.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
