S\ufeffouth Sydney<\/a> recruit Jack Wighton<\/a> has fired up at questions over his embattled close friend Latrell Mitchell<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mitchell again finds himself in the spotlight after being banned for three weeks for whacking Warriors veteran Shaun Johnson in the head<\/a> with an elbow.<\/p>\n

The ugly act was an exclamation point on a 34-4 loss at the hands of the Warriors in Sydney on Saturday.<\/p>\n

It sunk the sorry Bunnies to a 1-4 start to the season and nailed them to the bottom of the NRL ladder.<\/p>\n

On Monday night's 100% Footy<\/em> on Nine, Phil Gould questioned Mitchell's "love" for the game<\/a> and suggested he might be playing rugby league for the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n

Wighton was one of three Rabbitohs players who faced the media scrum after training on Monday, and he was asked about Gould's suggestion.<\/p>\n

"Of course he wants to play the game," Wighton said of Mitchell.<\/p>\n

"I said the other week when people started asking me about Latrell – I'm not here to talk about Latrell.<\/p>\n

"You want to talk about Latrell, you ask him."<\/p>\n

When pushed on the issue, Wighton bit back.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"If you want to ask Trell questions you talk to Trell, sorry," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's not my point, I'm here to talk about me and what I can do for the team.<\/p>\n

"I am a mate, and a mate protects a mate without talking about him. So you want to talk to Trell, you talk to Trell.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Wighton became close friends with Mitchell and Cody Walker during Indigenous All Stars camp, and their bond was a major reason the former left Canberra to move to South Sydney this season.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBut after five games the Rabbitohs are are reeling amid reports coach Jason Demetriou could be sacked if they lose to Cronulla this week.<\/p>\n

It's certainly not what Wighton expected to encounter so early into life in the cardinal and myrtle.<\/p>\n

"We've all got his back," he said of the coach.<\/p>\n

"No one likes losing. We're just in one of those patches. That's football, stuff happens. We can't dwell on the past, we get on with the next job and go again.<\/p>\n

"We take it personally, so don't think that we take it lighthearted.<\/p>\n

"But at the same time we have to move on – we addressed everything, we addressed the last game, so now we look forward to the future and that's the way you've got to do it.<\/p>\n

"If we dig holes and stay in our rut too long we'll go nowhere.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Making life harder for the Rabbitohs is the absence of fullback Mitchell\ufeff for the next three games.<\/p>\n

While his form has been down this season, the two-time premiership winner has the ability to drag the team to victory with freakish natural talent.<\/p>\n

Rabbitohs teammate Siliva Havili revealed Mitchell fronted the playing group following his suspension to apologise.<\/p>\n

"He's definitely apologetic for what's happened," Havili said.<\/p>\n

"Yeah he is (in love with the game), he had his best pre-season not long ago.<\/p>\n

"That's what happens when you're losing, you cop a lot of pressure… and he's the star player in our team, he's always going to be the one copping it.\ufeff"<\/p>\n
