Matthew Lloyd<\/a> has questioned the AFL's handling of Jeremy Finlayson's homophobic slur<\/a> against an unnamed Essendon<\/a> player during Port Adelaide's 69-point win on Friday night<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the AFL<\/a> announced it was investigating a homophobic slur made by Finlayson, after the comment was picked up on a field umpire's microphone.<\/p>\n

Finlayson told the club of his comment at three-quarter time of the match, with the club releasing a statement on Saturday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"A contrite Finlayson made the club aware during the three-quarter time break and apologised to the victim on [the] field after the final siren last night," the statement read.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, the forward also \ufeffreleased a statement.<\/p>\n

"The word I used is very unacceptable in the game of football. We need to stamp it out and I'm very remorseful," Finlayson said in a statement.<\/p>\n

"I knew straight away that it was not acceptable and I take full responsibility."<\/p>\n

The AFL is not expected to make a call on Finlayson's punishment until Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\ufeffLloyd now thinks the league cannot suspend Finlayson, due to the way they managed previous similar incidents.<\/p>\n

"How in the space of four or five weeks can Alastair Clarkson not get a week suspension, which I thought he should have?," Lloyd said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Monday night.<\/p>\n

"Is it because Jeremy Finlayson is easier, an easier player to rule out and suspend for a week than what Alastair Clarkson was?"<\/p>\n

It comes after Caroline Wilson expressed disappointment towards the league for allowing the incident to "drag on" with no solution days after it occurred.<\/p>\n

"Jeremy Finlayson still hasn't spoken to the AFL. I can't understand it," Wilson said.<\/p>\n

"They've (AFL) allowed this story to drag on as well, because they haven't done anything about it\ufeff.<\/p>\n

Wilson has now called upon the league to make a strong stance against Finlayson's comment.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"They have to stand up and show that they are so supportive of the \ufeffgay community and that they're not going to accept something like this," she said.<\/p>\n

However the AFL may have shot themselves in the foot in the pre season, deciding against suspending North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson<\/a>, after he used a homophobic slur against St Kilda's \ufeffJimmy Webster in a pre season match<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Clarkson was handed a suspended sentence and $20,000 fine after using a slur against Webster, who was suspended for seven weeks for a bump on North Melbourne's Jy Simpkin.<\/p>\n

Wilson holds fears that the league don't have the right to suspend Finlayson considering his lack of troubled past, compared to Clarkson's.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The problem of course is that Alastair Clarkson got off relatively scot-free, $20,000 fine is not much in the scheme of things," Wilson said.<\/p>\n

It comes after Port Adelaide president \ufeffDavid Koch also suggested that Finlayson deserves a fine at most.<\/p>\n

"I don't think that's realistic (Finlayson gets a week), I think the benchmark has already been set with Alastair Clarkson," Koch told the ABC on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Essendon forward \ufeffKyle Langford\ufeff called out Finlayson's behaviour on WWOS Radio with Sam McClure on Monday.<\/p>\n

"I'm very close with people in the LGBTQI community\ufeff, I've done a lot of work involved with the people at the Essendon Football Club," Langford said.<\/p>\n

"It shouldn't be any different to any kind of racial slur, Jeremy's owned up to that, good on him, but I hope the AFL deal with it\ufeff."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
