League icon Phil Gould<\/a> has questioned Latrell Mitchell<\/a>'s love of rugby league after he was suspended for three matches.<\/p>\n

Mitchell\ufeff was charged for an elbow on Shaun Johnson in the Rabbitohs' loss to the Warriors, and was subsequently hit with the ban by the match review committee.<\/p>\n

The fullback has been part of an unfortunate start for South Sydney, as they currently sit last on the ladder with coach Jason Demetriou reportedly fighting for his future<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffDespite a career in which he's won two grand finals, representing NSW seven times and playing for the Kangaroos on 10 occasions, which includes a World Cup, the fullback has been under intense scrutiny for his form and conduct off the field over the last two years.<\/p>\n

NRL chief executive officer Andrew Abdo also recently held a meeting with Mitchell after his conduct in a Triple M interview.<\/p>\n

Gould \ufeffbelieves there's a real fear the superstar could be lost to the game, stating: "If he woke up tomorrow\ufeff and decided I'm not going to play rugby league and went away to his farm, I would not be surprised".<\/p>\n

"Has anyone ever sat Latrell down and said do you really want to play this game?," he said on Nine's 100% Footy.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffAre you really in love with this game? Do you love the hard work? Do you love the discipline? Do you love your teammates? Do you love the club? … or is it just I'll do it because I'm good at it but I'll do it my own way.<\/p>\n

"Has someone actually sat him down and said if you had a chance to walk away, would you go? I reckon he would. I reckon he will, I don't see that he's in love with it at all."<\/p>\n

\ufeffDespite the criticism facing Mitchell, the Souths star's community work off the field has been laid bare in recent years, winning the 2023 Ken Stephen medal.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old also recently went to Moree with teammate Cody Walker as they helped launch a program combatting youth crime in the area<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Mitchell also visited Kempsey in the off season, launching the Fight for Success program\ufeff in partnership with the PCYC.<\/p>\n

League legend Paul Gallen noted the community work is one of Mitchell's true passions. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I tell you what he loves, his people\ufeff and he loves doing things for the community … during the week on his day off he jumped on a plane and went off to Moree to help with the police," he said.<\/p>\n

"And I got told by the police themselves he did an absolutely fantastic job. I think he likes giving back to the community, he likes doing those sorts of things.<\/p>\n

"I don't know if anyone's asked him that (about his love of the game), I can't imagine he doesn't like the game, but at the moment he just looks angry at the world and he's playing that way."<\/p>\n

Speaking specifically about his on-field performances, Gould added Mitchell "doesn't put a lot of work into the effort areas".<\/p>\n

"… \ufeffWe've been saying \ufeffthis for a few years with him. He plays at his own pace, he plays at his own style and his own way. He picks and chooses his times. And he doesn't put a lot of work into the effort areas of the game," he said.<\/p>\n

"It feels as though there's him and the rest of his team and they'll all say the right thing and blend in and stick up for him. The game sticks up for him and everyone sticks up for him but Latrell doesn't respond. He doesn't respond to that.<\/p>\n

"The problem is he's an elite talent, an incredible talent, he can change games, he can influence results\ufeff, no risk about that.<\/p>\n

"But how long since he's been doing that? He has little moments in games where things fall his way and he'll do it, but he doesn't go looking for work, he doesn't go looking for big moments and it would seem at times he's not where he should be at different times … that lets his team down as well."<\/p>\n

Gallen, who said he'd be "disappointed" but "wouldn't be surprised" if Mitchell made the heart-breaking decision to step away from the game, believes there needs to be further onus on the seniors players at the Rabbitohs.<\/p>\n

"We seem to lump it all on Latrell, he's a big voice we know that, he wants to be that big voice … if you want to be that player you're going to cop some criticism at times, and he's got to be able to accept that, but there's a lot of senior players at that club as well that need to stand up and help him," he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
