A crash in the Japanese Grand Prix couldn't have come at a worse time for Daniel Ricciardo<\/a>, yet there was plenty of sympathy for him from the right parts of the paddock.<\/p>\n

Just two turns into the 53-lap race, Ricciardo clashed with Williams driver Alex Albon<\/a> on the chute to turn three.<\/p>\n

Ricciardo was slow to get away and found himself with Aston Martin's Lance Stroll on his inside leading into the left-hander.<\/p>\n

Ricciardo looked left but was unaware of Albon on his outside and drifted across the nose of the trailing Thai driver.<\/p>\n

The pair made contact, immediately bursting the Australian's right rear tyre to send him into a wild spin while Albon was forced onto the grass and lost control of his car.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Both drivers hit the wall, which spat the tyre barrier into the run-off area and drew the red flag for repairs to the circuit.<\/p>\n

The incident drew mixed views, with Sky Sport F1's Anthony Davidson labelling it a racing incident.<\/p>\n

Ricciardo escaped punishment with race stewards content the clash was not malicious on Ricciardo's part.<\/p>\n

Ricciardo received support from \ufeffRed Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez post-race.<\/p>\n

"That was a big shunt, huh? He was just in the blind spot," said Perez in the post-race cooldown room.<\/p>\n

"You can see Daniel looking left to check the left side (for Stroll)," added Verstappen.<\/p>\n

"It's really unfortunate."<\/p>\n

There's continual speculation that Red Bull junior Liam Lawson will replace Ricciardo unless he improves.<\/p>\n

There have been rumours Lawson could replace Ricciardo from the Miami Grand Prix onwards if the Perth pilot doesn't up his performance.\ufeff<\/p>\n

RB teammate Yuki Tsunoda continued his 4-0 record in qualifying over Ricciardo, although the margin was a meagre 0.055s between them in Q2.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the incident, Ricciardo blamed the harder medium compound tyre for his slow start but said it was "just one of those things" in racing.<\/p>\n

"Today is (a) singular moment," said Ricciardo.<\/p>\n

"I don't look at today and think 'Oh, man this year,' like… 'When it rains, it pours,' or whatever. I feel it was just one of those things.<\/p>\n

"We know that (across) 24 races, it's likely that maybe I'm involved in another lap one incident, there's just probability these things kind of happen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It obviously sucks when they do. but I don't look at it any more than today being a kind of singular incident.<\/p>\n

"Of course, it would have been nice to get a race under our belt and try to show a little bit of something that I felt we were starting to show yesterday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We'll do that in China. I'm actually testing on Tuesday. So the laps that I missed today I'll get back on Tuesday."<\/p>\n

Albon added, "I don't think Daniel saw me and then it was just a bit of a pinching moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I tried to back out of it but couldn't quite get out of the way quickly enough. It was a tough one to take.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Obviously we're not in a great position as a team with parts and just general damage for the cars."<\/p>\n

The F1 season resumes with the Chinese Grand Prix on April 21 at the Shanghai International Circuit.<\/p>\n
