T\ufeffhe NRL<\/a> has paid tribute to legendary fullback Keith Barnes, who died at the age of 89.<\/p>\n

Barnes was known as "Golden Boots" due to his uncanny ability to kick goals – which in those days was done off the ground, rather than off a plastic tee as players do nowadays.<\/p>\n

Barnes played 194 games for the Balmain Tigers between 1955 and 1968\ufeff and later acted as the club's chief executive officer.<\/p>\n

He also captained Australia, having moved Down Under as a teenager after growing up in Wales.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The former Tigers captain-coach had a grandstand at Leichhardt Oval named in his honour in 2009.<\/p>\n

\ufeffHe is in Australia's rugby league hall of fame.<\/p>\n

Former Balmain winger Paul Cross said Barnes was a true champion.<\/p>\n

"He was a fine fullback and I also played with him in 1968, when he was captain-coach of the Tigers," Cross said.<\/p>\n

"He was a terrific bloke, good captain and a smart coach.<\/p>\n

"Sadly he played three grand finals and lost them all but was a Balmain man through and through and when they won the comp the year after he retired (1969), he was delighted."<\/p>\n

ARLC chairman Peter V'landys paid tribute on behalf of the game.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"Keith was one of the greatest fullbacks the game has seen," V'landys said on Monday.<\/p>\n

"A wonderful goalkicker and prolific point scorer, he was slight in stature but built with extraordinary courage.<\/p>\n

"The stories of Keith's skills but also importantly his leadership are renowned across the game, having captained the Kangaroos in 14 Test matches.<\/p>\n
