UPDATED:<\/strong> Bulldogs and Richmond legend Nathan Brown<\/a> believes Port Adelaide<\/a> forward Jeremy Finlayson will receive a fine after publicly admitting to and apologising for making a homophobic slur towards an Essendon<\/a> player.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the AFL<\/a> announced it was investigating a homophobic slur made by Finlayson and directed at an Essendon<\/a> player during their round-four encounter on Friday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was reported by afl.com.au that the slur, made by Finlayson, was picked up on the on-field umpires' microphones.<\/p>\n

In a statement from Port Adelaide on Saturday, \ufeffthe club confirmed that Finlayson \ufeffadmitted to making a homophobic slur against an Essendon opponent during the third quarter of the match.<\/p>\n

"A contrite Finlayson made the club aware during the three-quarter time break and apologised to the victim on [the] field after the final siren last night," the statement read.<\/p>\n

"Finlayson, who will be counselled by club leaders in the coming days, will provide a statement [on Sunday].<\/p>\n

"The club will now wait for the AFL to complete its investigation."<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Finlayson said he is taking full responsibility for his behaviour.<\/p>\n

"The word I used is very unacceptable in the game of football. We need to stamp it out and I'm very remorseful," he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

"I knew straight away that it was not acceptable and I take full responsibility.<\/p>\n

"I addressed it at the time and \u2026 let everyone know what happened, and it's now in the hands of the AFL to investigate.<\/p>\n

"I'm continuing to reflect and improve myself, getting all the education I can to make myself better."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Last month, North Melbourne coach \ufeffAlastair Clarkson received a two-match wholly suspended sanction alongside a $20,000 fine<\/a> for an "unacceptable and highly inappropriate" verbal attack towards St Kilda players Jimmy Webster and Dougal Howard.<\/p>\n

Because of the precedent set by Clarkson's sanction, Brown thinks that Finlayson will also receive a fine as punishment.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"He acted pretty quickly, Jeremy Finlayson," \ufeffBrown told Nine's Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"He realised he'd made a big mistake.<\/p>\n

"There's been a precedent set \ufeff\u2014 Alastair Clarkson, who has been in trouble before with the AFL, got a fine.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffSo, I think with the precedent set [and] Jeremy Finlayson obviously dobbing himself in, I think it'll be the same [penalty].<\/p>\n

"I couldn't see him getting suspended for any games."<\/p>\n

Port Adelaide chairman David Koch has also compared the incident to that of Clarkson.<\/p>\n

"If you look at comparisons \u2014 and benchmarks have got to be set \u2014 with a 55-year-old coach, premeditated, target the player, walk up to them; it is very different to a player in the heat of battle when there was a lot of niggle in the game," Koch told ABC's Offsiders<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The League's integrity unit will review the incident.<\/p>\n

AFL spokesperson Jay Allen confirmed that the AFL was aware of the slur and is investigating.<\/p>\n

"We are aware of an alleged comment made by a Port Adelaide player in last night's match vs Essendon," he said on Saturday.<\/p>\n

"We are taking this matter extremely seriously. AFLIU (AFL integrity unit) are now investigating and we will provide an update once that investigation is completed."<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's The Footy Show<\/em><\/a> on Sunday morning, Andrew Dillon promised a prompt investigation with accountability for Finlayson.<\/p>\n

"We'll look into that, we've got to run a process, speak to all involved, but Jeremy's come out, he's admitted to making the comment and he's apologised," he said.<\/p>\n

"So now we've just got to work through what the accountability will be. I don't want to put too much of a time frame on it, but it will be done this week."<\/p>\n

Essendon are yet to respond to the matter.<\/p>\n

Finlayson finished with \ufeffthree goals and 19 disposals in the Power's 69-point victory over the Bombers' during Gather Round.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
