Kane Cornes<\/a> has slammed the AFL's plans to expand their Gather Round fixtures for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

With the league's 19th team, Tasmania Devils<\/a>, locked in to join the AFL in 2028, fixturing for Gather Round will become a serious problem.<\/p>\n

The Devils, as the 19th side, make the competition uneven, meaning that in 2028 and until the league introduces a 20th license, one club will be forced to sit out of Gather Round.<\/p>\n

In response to the\ufeff possibility, the AFL has hinted at the possibility of holding multiple Gather Rounds during 2028 and beyond.<\/p>\n

9News Melbourne chief football reporter Tom Morris confirmed the structure.<\/p>\n

"The first (Gather Round) would be in Victoria and Tasmania across Labour Day weekend, the second would be in Sydney across Easter and the third would be either in Perth or Adelaide, alternating annually, across the winter holidays," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's just a way to include all teams and each club would play two of those three Gather Rounds."\ufeff<\/p>\n

However, Cornes has blasted the league's idea.<\/p>\n

"Three Gather Rounds. What a ridiculous concept," he said on Nine's Sunday Footy Show.<\/em><\/p>\n

Cornes, who played 300 games for Port Adelaide, declared the concept simply won't work in NRL-favouring states.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Gather Round in New South Wales? How many people in New South Wales would go and watch Fremantle and Carlton? No one," Cornes said.<\/p>\n

"Then you're going to have another one in SA or WA. Western Australia's got the horrible time difference and it's miles away, so no one is going to go there.<\/p>\n

"Anywhere else it does not work.\ufeff It just works here (in Adelaide)."<\/p>\n

\ufeffHe went on to urge the AFL to lock in a long term contract with South Australia to keep Gather Round as the one round.<\/p>\n

"It is working, this is the place to have it. Just lock it in like you've locked in the Grand Final in Melbourne for 50 years and let's have it here for a long, long time," he said.<\/p>\n
