B\ufeffrad Fittler<\/a> has thrown his support behind the Bunker after a controversial try<\/a> was awarded to Manly during their win over Penrith<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The league legend was given special access in the Bunker \ufefffor the clash and said his initial thought was the ball went backwards when Tommy Talau fumbled an intercept, before Toluta'u Koula sprinted away to score.<\/p>\n

Fittler said his mind changed upon watching several cameras that reviewed the footage.<\/p>\n

"When you watch it, it just went backwards, I don't know how it went backwards but when he pulled the ball in it just went backwards," he said on Nine's Sunday Footy Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fellow league great Andrew Johns<\/a> agreed.<\/p>\n

"The rotation of the ball was going back towards their try line, which is an indication it went back," he said.<\/p>\n

Post-game, Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said "everybody in the stadium knew it was a knock-on" but refused to put the decision down to his side's loss. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Fittler was in the Bunker for another match throughout round five, and gave a special insight into how the system works as it continues to attract criticism for decisions over the season. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"It's high pressure … what happens is there's an \ufeffannouncement at the minute mark for the goalkickers and every time I was coming in I was thinking it was for the Bunker, so I'm going 'come up with the decision, hurry, hurry' but they're very calm, they've got really good systems," he said.<\/p>\n

"The systems during the game where there might be a bit of a high tackle and the game rolls on … like the Latrell incident<\/a>, what would've happened there is someone would watch live play and they keep watching the game and then the other person goes back two tackles and goes through the incident.<\/p>\n

"They go through nine cameras for every game, in State of Origin they have 23 cameras to go through for that and grand finals.<\/p>\n

"You're not getting away with anything, if you think you're a player and getting away with a face rub every now and then or a little high shot every now and then, it is getting watched every single time without a doubt."<\/p>\n

Since its inception in 2016, the Bunker has been under heavy scrutiny as the game continues to try and police high contact, obstructions and a number of other rules.<\/p>\n

A belief within the game has been the Bunker is in the ear of on-field referees constantly, but Fittler believes that's a myth.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"What they don't do is they don't overburden the referee with too much noise which a lot of us feel like they are," he said.<\/p>\n

"The referee, he can only hear his touch judges, that's it and then what happens is he has a coach come in after tries and has a yarn to him.<\/p>\n

"I've got to say they do a brilliant job, it is very effective how it all works.<\/p>\n

"Obviously the obstructions come down to decisions … every time someone runs through the line, they're winding tape back, making sure and clearing things."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
