\ufeffMercedes<\/a> has been fined over $8200 for the unsafe release of George Russell<\/a> ahead of Oscar Piastri<\/a> during qualifying at the Japanese Grand Prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Russell was forced to front the stewards at the conclusion of qualifying after it was announced that he would be investigated for an unsafe release into the path of Piastri's McLaren<\/a> in the pit lane.<\/p>\n

As the field made their way onto the track for Q1, \ufeffRussell left the Mercedes garage and edged his way into the fast lane ahead of Piastri and the queue of drivers behind him.<\/p>\n

"Very dangerous from Russell," Piastri could be heard saying over the team radio.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen<\/a> was asked a few days ago if he had concerns going into the Japanese GP.<\/p>\n

His rear brakes caught fire just two weeks ago at the Australian Grand Prix, forcing him out on the fourth lap<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no,\u201d Verstappen replied.<\/p>\n

True to his word. No worries. The Dutchman claimed the pole for Red Bull in qualifying and is poised to return to his unprecedented dominance in F1 after the blip in Australia.<\/p>\n

Verstappen clocked 1:28.197, just 0.066 ahead of Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez. Lando Norris of Mclaren and Carlos Sainz of Ferrari \u2014 the winner in Australia \u2014 will make up the second row.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was quite close at the end,\u201d Verstappen said of Perez.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think overall this track is very sensitive with the tyres. When you really want to go to the limit it doesn't always work out."<\/p>\n

Verstappen did not sound totally pleased with his day, suggesting the car's flat-out speed was not what he expected.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe point is to be on pole,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course you want every lap to be perfect but around a track like this, that's not always the case. But overall a very good day \u2014 a good starting position for tomorrow. And of course, tomorrow is what counts.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also relished starting alongside Perez.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt's great as a team of course to be one and two, and hopefully we can keep that going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Verstappen is the three-time defending champion, holds almost every F1 record, and has won 21 of the last 25 races entering Sunday\u2019s race in Japan.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s won every pole this season \u2013 four \u2013 and this was the 36th of his career and he chases his 57th win on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, who dominated the sport before Verstappen, is without a win in 48 races \u2013 the last in 2021. He will start from seventh on the grid.<\/p>\n

Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin was fifth, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri qualifying in sixth place ahead of Hamilton.<\/p>\n

As Russell did not receive a grid penalty for his unsafe release, he with start ninth\ufeff.<\/p>\n

Australian Daniel Ricciardo was knocked out of Q2 by his RB teammate, and local hope, Yuki Tsunoda to take 11th position.<\/p>\n

The Japanese Grand Prix gets underway at 3pm AEST on \ufeffSunday.<\/p>\n
