N\ufeffewcastle<\/a> goalkeeper Isobel Nino has had a two-game ban upheld for "assault" during an A-League Women<\/a> game.<\/p>\n

The incident happened during the Jets' clash with Melbourne Victory on March 23.<\/p>\n

Newcastle was leading 3-2 in stoppage time when tempers flared.<\/p>\n

Jets player MelindaJ Barbieri was crouched on the ground injured, when Victory player Emily Gielnik \ufeffrushed over and attempted to drag her opponent to her feet.<\/p>\n

Barbieri reacted angrily and several Newcastle players rushed in to defend her.<\/p>\n

But Nino went a step further by grabbing \ufeffGielnik by the throat during the altercation.<\/p>\n

Barbieri and Gielnik were each handed a yellow by the referee, but Nino was marched with a straight red for her involvement.<\/p>\n

She was subsequently hit with a two-game ban\ufeff, which she appealed.<\/p>\n

But Football Australia on Friday confirmed the full suspension would be upheld.<\/p>\n

"T\ufeffhe independent match review panel determined that Nino committed the offence of 'Assault on a player (e.g. violent conduct when not challenging for the ball) or against any other person other than a match official, including an attempted assault'," a media release said.<\/p>\n

Nino had argued "exceptional circumstances applied" to her actions, but the panel dismissed that claim.<\/p>\n
