Shane van Gisbergen's<\/a> success in NASCAR<\/a> could be the catalyst for more Supercars<\/a> drivers to ditch Australia for the United States.<\/p>\n

Cameron Waters is the latest driver confirmed to head Stateside to try his hand at stock car racing.<\/p>\n

The three-time Bathurst 1000<\/a> podium finisher will race in the third-tier Truck Series, which sits below the Cup Series and Xfinity Series.<\/p>\n

Waters will race a Ford F1-50 for ThorSport Racing at Martinsville Speedway, one of the calendar's most iconic ovals, in what is currently a one-off appearance.<\/p>\n

The 847-metre concrete oval will host the top three divisions of NASCAR, with Waters to contest a 200-lap race on Saturday (AEDT).<\/p>\n

Speaking ahead of his debut, Waters said he's been eagerly awaiting an opportunity after beginning discussions more than a year ago.<\/p>\n

"I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time," said Waters.<\/p>\n

"Shane was super lucky with how his stuff all came together and I was super happy for him and how Chicago went was obviously amazing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

"For me, it's been something that I've wanted to do for a long time and it's just great to finally be able to pull something together and do this race."<\/p>\n

Long-term, Waters hopes to race full-time in NASCAR.<\/p>\n

However, he concedes his focus is primarily in Australia where he competes for Tickford Racing.<\/p>\n

"I've wanted to do it for years, but with what I do in Australia has always been my focus and still is my focus, for sure," said Waters.<\/p>\n

"We came to Martinsville 12 months ago and watched a race and that's what probably sparked a bit more interest in me to pursue it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I've just been chipping away in the background over the last 12 months to make something happen like this.<\/p>\n

"I definitely have a dream to one day get over here and race full-time NASCAR," he added.<\/p>\n

"To get there it's such a long journey and I've got a pretty cool thing going on in Australia racing Supercars.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

"For me to do the odd NASCAR race like we're doing this weekend is pretty cool.<\/p>\n

"We'll go through this weekend and have a bit of fun and work out what NASCAR is all about and see what happens in the future."<\/p>\n

Van Gisbergen is the most recent driver to go full-time in NASCAR, driving for Kaulig Racing in the Xfinity Series alongside a part-time Cup Series program.<\/p>\n

He will race on Sunday (AEDT) at Martinsville at 9.30am.<\/p>\n

Brodie Kostecki made a one-off appearance in the Cup Series at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2023.<\/p>\n

Last year's Supercars champion was expected to make cameo appearances in the Cup Series this year but has not yet announced a program.<\/p>\n

If there's one thing all the Supercars drivers can agree on, it's that they want to race more.<\/p>\n

Waters often supplements his touring car program with speedway racing while others compete in GT cars.<\/p>\n

"It's totally different to how we go racing in Australia," said Waters.<\/p>\n

"We have 12 weekends a year that we're racing, where over here you're racing every weekend. It's pretty full-on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The style of our racing is totally different. I've grown up on a dirt oval background. My dad used to race.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I've raced sprint cars, late models, modifieds, so oval stuff isn't new to me, so I wanted to come over and experience the pavement oval."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
