NRL<\/a> superstars Latrell Mitchell<\/a> and Cody Walker<\/a> flew to Moree\ufeff to on Wednesday launch a program aimed at combatting youth crime in the area.<\/p>\n

NSW premier Chris Minns led the launch of a program called Project Pathfinder, planning to link at-risk teenagers with NRL players for one-on-one mentorships.<\/p>\n

It follows Minns' recent announcement of tougher bail laws for young people as regional NSW grapples with a spike in youth crime, a lot of which is violent.<\/p>\n

"NRL's a religion in Indigenous communities so you've got to understand the impact\ufeff [that can be had through the program]," Mitchell told 9News' Danny Weidler, who flew to Moree with Mitchell and Walker.<\/p>\n

"Peter [ARL Commission chairman Peter V'landys] and Andrew [NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo] are doing a great job working with the police force and getting us out here to be that missing link. It's something we love to do. It's getting out here and showing kids there's light at the end of the tunnel if you work hard enough and … you do bad things, you get repercussions, you do good things, you get rewards."<\/p>\n

V'landys said he "couldn\ufeff't have said it any better".<\/p>\n

"If we can change one kid to eliminate that vicious cycle and get a better quality of life it's been worth every minute," V'landys said.<\/p>\n

In addition to one-on-one mentorships with NRL players, the Project Pathfinder program will offer more footy clinics and community visits throughout regional NSW.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Kids who have committed crimes are not eligible for the program.<\/p>\n

"I suppose in some respects we can't be seen to be rewarding children or kids who are actively involved in crime," said assistant police commissioner Gavin Wood.<\/p>\n

Walker says he embraces the opportunity\ufeff to help youth.<\/p>\n

"I understand the responsibility that falls on our shoulders," said the veteran South Sydney five-eighth.<\/p>\n

"Being positive role models to our people is something I enjoy doing. Trying to create a positive future for our young people\ufeff is something I'm pretty passionate about, and hopefully it can inspire one or two kids in the community to live on and live a positive lifestyle."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
