P\ufeffhil Gould<\/a> has issued some timely advice to NRL<\/a> coaches about the art of delivering a spray to their playing group, after Des Hasler<\/a> was filmed giving Gold Coast<\/a> both barrels on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Titans sunk to a third loss from three games this season, going down to the Dolphins 30-14.<\/p>\n

In the aftermath, Fox League leaked dressing room vision of two-time premiership coach Hasler lambasting his players<\/a> for another dire performance.<\/p>\n

Gould often says NRL coaches get about one effective spray per season, before the tactic wears thin on players.<\/p>\n

"I used to say to coaches (about) half time talks – take a deep breath and understand the ramifications of what you're about to do," Gould reiterated on Wide World of Sports' Six Tackles with Gus<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n

\"Des<\/p>\n

"The one question I ask myself is what do you want to say, and what do they need to hear right now? And that might be different to what you want to say.<\/p>\n

"What you really want to say, you can't say. You can't say it because it's not going to have the effect you want.<\/p>\n

"It's your emotion, and once that happens, if they get a feeling that it's about you, you are now on the way out, simple as that.<\/p>\n

"Rule of thumb for me is… ask yourself the question, and always take time going down to the dressing room at half time if you're upset or you're emotional.<\/p>\n

"At some point you need to ask the question what do they need to hear, not what do I want to say.<\/p>\n

"All coaches make the mistake, and you learn by it.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Hasler is one of the more experienced coaches in the game, having led Manly to two grand finals victories in 2008 and 2011 before a stint with Canterbury that included another two grand final appearances.<\/p>\n

But he's now lost 10 games on the trot.<\/p>\n

His second tenure with the Sea Eagles ended in disaster with seven consecutive losses last year before being axed, and now he's winless through three games on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n

His arrival on the glitter strip came with high hopes of turning the struggling Titans around.<\/p>\n

But Gould isn't sure the tactic that was filmed on Saturday is the way to do it.<\/p>\n

"We've all been there, and what I learned over my career was at the end of the day, you were probably wasting your time," he said.<\/p>\n

"You had to be really timely with that sort of outburst if it was going to have the effect you wanted. That's why I've always said you only get one of those a year.<\/p>\n

"But as you get more experienced at it you find out there is really no time for it – you don't need it, there is another way to deliver it.<\/p>\n

"For Des, who is extremely experienced… for him to feel the way he did there was something in that game that was specifically against instruction, or against what they had committed to they hadn't delivered, what they had promised each other they hadn't held true.<\/p>\n

"Whatever it was, it really upset him, and he let them know it.\ufeff"<\/p>\n
