AFL<\/a> legend Nick Riewoldt<\/a> revealed a frightening Easter run-in that could have turned fatal on his Texan ranch.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe St Kilda<\/a> icon moved his family to the States last year, having retired from football in 2017 after a 16-year career at the top level.<\/p>\n

But it seems he's still adjusting to life as a rancher.<\/p>\n

He was dealt a harsh\ufeff lesson over the Easter weekend when he came into contact with a poisonous rattlesnake near his house.<\/p>\n

"I learnt a pretty valuable lesson about ranch life and that is that it's not like the beach, you always have to have a pair of boots on," Riewoldt told the Footy Talk<\/em> podcast with fellow Saints great Leigh Montagna.<\/p>\n

"I went out to get a piece of wood to chuck on the fire, and it was dark outside, and… being the ranch type that I am,<\/em> I felt pretty confident in my surrounds.<\/p>\n

"I walked out and I was looking for the light switch, I was walking along this wall and I looked down because I had trodden on something and couldn't quite figure out what it was – until it started going 'ch, ch, ch'.<\/p>\n

"It was a bloody rattlesnake, Joey (Montagna). I had trod on a rattlesnake with bare feet.<\/p>\n

"Somehow it didn't strike, which I'm told is what a rattlesnake does. It slithered off, I called everyone out.<\/p>\n

\"Nick<\/p>\n

"I absolutely lost it, actually might have been some residue in my pants afterward\u2026 I don't think I've ever shit myself that hard in my life.<\/p>\n

"I was absolutely terrified. Terrified.<\/p>\n

"Because I called everyone out, everyone came out and had a look… they just laughed at me.<\/p>\n

"Like, bare foot, what are you doing, idiot? Bit of a close call\ufeff for me."<\/p>\n

There are 10 species of rattlesnake believed to live in Texas.<\/p>\n

The Texas Department of State Health Services says one to two people die each year due to rattlesnake bites – although only about 1 in every 500 bites result in fatality.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
