The "Yabbies"\ufeff has been revealed as the leading contender as Rowing Australia<\/a> searches for a team name just under four months out from Paris 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rowing Australia noted a couple of weeks ago the Matildas, Boomers, Dolphins and Diamonds were among the iconic national team names \u2014 and called for the public to do some brainstorming for the Olympic<\/a> and Paralympic<\/a> rowers.<\/p>\n

In a segment that ran on Nine's Wide World of Sports\ufeff<\/em> on Sunday morning, rower Georgie Rowe grabbed a microphone and quizzed her teammates on what they thought should become the team name.<\/p>\n

The \ufeff"Yabbies", the "Crocs", the "Iron Oars" and even the "Emus" were among the suggestions tossed up.<\/p>\n

"Out of those ones I like the yabbies. At our training centre [in Penrith] we're all getting around the yabbies," Rowe said in the Nine studio while moving her hands like yabbies.<\/p>\n

"I was pretty inspired this morning. I went for a swim and saw some wobbegong sharks\ufeff and some cuttlefish."<\/p>\n

Rower Tara Rigney, who joined Rowe in the studio, threw up a left-field option.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I really like the orcas," said the single sculler.<\/p>\n

"A little play on words.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I know it's not an Australian animal, but I think orcas are cool animals."<\/p>\n

Rowing Australia's women's squad has been based in Penrith since late 2016, when the governing body made a centralisation move following an underwhelming campaign at the Rio Olympics.<\/p>\n

The squad trains tirelessly on the Nepean River under the guidance of head coach John Keogh.<\/p>\n

The women's squad's best chance of winning an Olympic gold medal in Paris is in the women's pair event, in which Jessica Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre will join forces<\/a> at Nautical Stadium.\ufeff<\/p>\n
