The Hurricanes<\/a>' thumping win over the Highlanders<\/a> might have come at a massive cost.<\/p>\n

Cam Roigard, the outstanding All Blacks<\/a> halfback, left the field on a stretcher halfway through the second half in obvious pain.<\/p>\n

He appeared to badly injure his left knee in an innocuous tackle and may be set for a significant period on the sidelines.<\/p>\n

Hurricanes coach Clark Laidlaw was delighted with the Hurricanes' performance but admitted that Roigard's injury had put a dampener on the evening.<\/p>\n

"Injuries are part of the game," he said. "It's hugely disappointing for him, not just us.<\/p>\n

"We're not really sure what he's done, but we'll get that assessed.<\/p>\n

"He went to hospital to get X-rays and get it checked, so we'll find out tonight or tomorrow morning.<\/p>\n

"It's always a little bit sad to see one of your best players pick up what looks like a serious injury. It's maybe a patella tendon, but takes a lot for for Cam to stay down. He's a pretty tough bugger, so he was obviously sore.<\/p>\n

The game was halted for several minutes as Roigard was treated, and even with TJ Perenara in their squad, his loss would be a big blow to the Hurricanes' title aspirations.<\/p>\n

And, before Roigard's injury, those aspirations were looking increasingly realistic.<\/p>\n

The Hurricanes were a joy to watch under the roof, a mixture of skill, pace, athleticism and set-piece pressure as they repeatedly dismantled the Highlanders' defence.<\/p>\n

In Brett Cameron, they also have a No.10 who is hard-wired not to overplay his hand, an attribute that is allowing his outsides and rampant loose forwards to unleash their potential.<\/p>\n

The bonus point win returned them to the top of the ladder, and they are now five competition points ahead of the Blues before next week's bye, with a blockbuster against the Chiefs following the week after.<\/p>\n

The loss makes it 19 defeats in a row for the Highlanders against New Zealand opposition, and the rest of their season is shaping as a dogfight to make the playoffs, especially as they have to play the Hurricanes and Blues again.<\/p>\n

They also had a horror night on the injury front, losing Fabian Holland, Josh Timu, Tom Sanders and Jona Nareki – the latter to a serious-looking ankle injury.<\/p>\n

The Highlanders were done no favours by referee Damon Murphy, who dished out an early yellow to Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens for an offence on his own line, even though it looked like the fullback, in combination with Timoci Tavatavanawai, had made a fair steal over the ball.<\/p>\n

The Hurricanes scored 14 points in Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens' absence, and the Highlanders' woes were compounded when they lost Nareki just as it looked like he might reduce the deficit under the Hurricanes' posts.<\/p>\n

However, the gulf between the sides was illustrated by how the teams converted their chances: the Hurricanes were composed and lethal, while the Highlanders were guilty of blowing three gilt-edged opportunities in the first half alone.<\/p>\n

Brayden Iose and Peter Lakai, in particular, were superb for the Hurricanes with their ball-carrying and ruck work.<\/p>\n

Roigard and Kini Naholo were also outstanding with ball in hand, breaking tackles at will at times, while fullback Ruben Love continued to shout "pick me coach" at new All Blacks boss Scott Robertson.<\/p>\n

Perenara also grabbed his 60th Super Rugby<\/a> try, to sit just one behind record-holder Julian Savea on the all-time list.<\/p>\n

For the Highlanders, Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens stood out again with his determined running from fullback.<\/p>\n

However, Welsh No.10 Rhys Patchell had a night to forget, summed up by an intercept pass that gave Josh Moorby a try on a platter.<\/p>\n
