North Queensland Cowboys<\/a> coach Todd Payten<\/a> has declared his side "wouldn't beat the Temora Dragons" after a heavy 38-12 defeat to the Broncos<\/a>. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Payten, who was raised in the NSW rural town, cut a dejected figure post-match with Friday's loss the first of the season for North Queensland.<\/p>\n

The coach labelled the match 'disappointing' after his side conceded 17 errors to the Broncos' 10, while also missing a number of crucial tackles. <\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe come down to Brisbane, it's our biggest club game of the year and we gave the opposition too many shots inside our own half," he said.<\/p>\n

"We wouldn't beat the Temora Dragons by doing that.<\/p>\n

"You give a good attacking team too many shots and you're no chance to win."<\/p>\n

The visitors were in the game at half-time at Suncorp Stadium, only trailing 20-12 despite Brisbane's overall dominance.<\/p>\n

In the second half however, Payten's side was kept scoreless with the only highlight being Tom Dearden's incredible try-saver on Selwyn Cobbo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Brisbane scored only minutes after Dearden's remarkable effort through Tyson Smoothy, who went past some feeble defence in the middle.<\/p>\n

Payten labelled that the "most disappointing part" of his team's performance. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I thought we should've been down by more at half-time to be fair," he said.<\/p>\n

"The most disappointing part for me of the game was Tommy Dearden makes this awesome defensive play, one of the better ones I've seen in a long time, and we just have no spark or reaction off the back of that.<\/p>\n

"We're sitting here (and it's) a real reality check about some of our football."<\/p>\n

North Queensland came into the grudge match with wins over the Dolphins, Knights and Dragons, but were hardly convincing in the last two matches.<\/p>\n

Payten said there were no indications in training that a poor display was on the horizon.<\/p>\n

"I thought we had a really good week, everyone was super motivated," he said.<\/p>\n

"Conceding the try the way we did first through the ruck just deflates our energy and the opposition get a heap of energy and then from there our back five made 14 errors throughout the game and they've been a real strength for us for the first three games."\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
