AFL<\/a> great David King has called on the game to crack down on stomach punches as Collingwood<\/a> veteran Scott Pendlebury<\/a> sweats on a potential charge.<\/p>\n

The 36-year-old is awaiting the match review officer's finding after he whacked Brisbane<\/a>'s Lachie Neale<\/a> during Thursday's game at the Gabba.<\/p>\n

While it was with an open hand and not a fist, the force was enough to knock the wind out of Neale and floor the reigning Brownlow Medal winner.<\/p>\n

Pendlebury has never been suspended in his 387 AFL games to date, and was contrite when asked about the incident post-game.<\/p>\n

He did, though, suggest his action was a result of being badgered by the Lions.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I said sorry to him, I didn't mean to get him right there," Pendlebury said.<\/p>\n

"What will be will be… (the) retaliator always gets caught, Mum taught me that.<\/p>\n

"I got sucked in tonight."<\/p>\n

Speaking on Fox Footy, North Melbourne legend King said the AFL should crack down on similar acts.<\/p>\n

But he's happy for it to wait until next year.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"This has to stop, so you've got 12 months to get it out of your system," King said.<\/p>\n

"You can whack each other as much as you like with an open hand in the stomach at stoppages and those sorts of things (this year).<\/p>\n

"But it does have to stop. It does permeate down to the lower levels, you don't want to see it in kids footy."'<\/p>\n

King seemed to be alone in thinking the Pendlebury action warranted a suspension.<\/p>\n

His fellow Fox Footy panellists suggested a fine was the most Pendlebury should be hit with.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I wouldn't like to see anyone suspended for that," Leigh Montagna said.<\/p>\n

"It's not a good look and he'll get fined. But I don't think a player should miss a week for an open hand to the stomach."<\/p>\n
