A defiant South Sydney<\/a> coach Jason Demetriou<\/a> says he won't bow to calls for Latrell Mitchell<\/a> to be moved from fullback.<\/p>\n

And he certainly won't be replacing Mitchell with talented teenager Jye Gray, who some commentators have suggested could steal the No.1 jumper off the million-dollar star.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old Gray has shot to prominence with a couple of eye-catching performances in the NSW Cup this season.<\/p>\n

But the young Queenslander will have to bide his time for a shot at the NRL, despite the Rabbitohs being winless from three games.<\/p>\n

"Everybody wants to put Jye Gray in," Demetriou told media on Thursday.<\/p>\n

"He's had two games in NSW Cup against men. He's 19 years old.<\/p>\n

"I've got a duty of care to Jye to make sure that he's not only ready to play first grade, but he's ready to hold his position in first grade.<\/p>\n

"I'm a big believer in Jye and where he's going in his career, and I'll make the decisions based on what's best for him and the club moving forward to make sure he's a long-term player for us.<\/p>\n

"He understands that, and he's still got some growth. He's learned some things that he'll keep learning over the next few weeks.<\/p>\n

"I'm not going to rush a 19-year-old kid in to replace one of the best players in our club.<\/p>\n

"Latrell has had some good times in the first two games and no one enjoyed last week. It's up to us to get back to enjoying the things that give us energy."<\/p>\n

Mitchell was off the boil last week as the Bunnies were towelled up by their arch rivals the Roosters in Sydney's east.<\/p>\n

He and five-eighth Cody Walker were the only ones to survive a spine cull last week that saw Lachlan Ilias dumped from the team, and hooker Damien Cook be benched.<\/p>\n
