Liberty Media, the conglomerate that owns Formula 1<\/a>, is on the verge of finalising a deal to acquire MotoGP<\/a> owners Dorna Sport for $6.6 billion.<\/p>\n

According to the Financial Times, Liberty is poised to take over the Spanish-based motorcycle racing operator.<\/p>\n

Liberty's acquisition of Dorna Sports would give it control of other high-profile categories including the World Superbike Championship, MotoE, and the British Superbike Championship among other two-wheel series.<\/p>\n

TKO, the company which owns and operates UFC, recently made an unsuccessful bid to acquire MotoGP. Paris Saint-Germain owners Qatar Sports Investments also held talks with Dorna.<\/p>\n

There is a major hurdle Liberty has to overcome to finalise the change of ownership, however.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Financial Times reports a deal is as good as done, but it could come under scrutiny from regulators.<\/p>\n

CVC Capital Partners once owned Formula 1 and MotoGP but was forced to sell its stake in the motorcycle grand prix championship after the European Commission raised concerns.<\/p>\n

Competition regulators, the European Commission, could snipe the deal given the scale of both organisations.<\/p>\n

Whether attitudes have changed in the nearly 20 years since CVC Capital Partners were forced to sell could seal Liberty's fate.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Dorna is primarily owned by Bridgepoint (40 per cent) and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (38 per cent).<\/p>\n

Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta is also a shareholder (22 per cent) and has led the orgnisation for the best part of three decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n

An announcement could come as soon as next week. Motorsport.com reports Dorna and Liberty had hoped to announce the deal at the season-opening Qatar Grand Prix but concerns around intervention from the European Commission stalled those plans.<\/p>\n

Liberty taking hold of Dorna could only be seen as a good thing for MotoGP as far as its promotion goes.<\/p>\n

Under Liberty, Formula 1 has enjoyed significant growth thanks to the expansion of its calendar and the Drive to Survive docuseries on Netflix.<\/p>\n

Liberty took hold of Formula 1 in 2016.<\/p>\n

Like Formula 1, MotoGP operates similarly in that most of its income is from broadcast rights deals, circuit hosting fees, sponsorship, corporate hospitality, and merchandise.<\/p>\n
