Australian sporting great Anthony Mundine<\/a> admits regret over the war of words he found himself in with Latrell Mitchell<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe pair traded barbs earlier this month amid the ugly fallout from Roosters<\/a> prop Spencer Leniu calling Brisbane<\/a>'s Ezra Mam a "monkey" during their game in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n

Leniu was banned for eight games over the racist slur but the week between the incident and the judiciary hearing was filled with \ufeffdebate and hot takes.<\/p>\n

Mundine posted a controversial video to social media in which he claimed "it ain't racism" and told Mam to "toughen up" and "take it on the chin" despite the young Broncos playmaker reportedly being distraught over the saga.<\/p>\n

\ufeffSouth Sydney superstar Mitchell responded to Mundine in an Instagram post, saying "This what our people get told to do and continue to get told – 'Be quiet fall in line'".<\/p>\n

Mundine unleased again and called Mitchell an "underperformer" in another social media attack.<\/p>\n

But in an interview with Nine's Today on Thursday morning, the one-time Dragons star moved to mend the bridge.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"\ufeffI felt a bit disrespected when he came at me," Mundine said of Mitchell.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThinking back now I probably should have just called him up and said 'bra, what are you doing?' – and vice versa, he should have (called) me.<\/p>\n

"It feels a bit silly how it played out. I love the kid\ufeff, I don't want to break anybody's confidence or whatever, I want the best for him.<\/p>\n

"He can be one of the best players in the world\ufeff."<\/p>\n

Mundine's original take on the Leniu slur was confusing given he himself regularly called out racism in rugby league during his playing days.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe speedy utility back was one of the most exciting players in the NRL, but only played one State of Origin series for NSW and never represented Australia.<\/p>\n

He claimed he was snubbed from representative selection due to being Aboriginal.<\/p>\n

To this day he holds a grudge against the game.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThe reason I got out of rugby league is they never gave me my just dues, never gave me my No.6 Australian jersey," Mundine told Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"Today they have other (Indigenous) brothers supporting each other\ufeff. I was by myself, one out.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt's always going to be in society, it's always going to be in sport, racism.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffYou're constantly putting out fires. You need to continue to fight, we need to continue to educate the current crop and the next generation.<\/p>\n
