D\ufeffes Hasler<\/a> was expected to breathe new life into the Titans<\/a> this year – but instead the side has now emerged as NRL<\/a> wooden spoon candidates.<\/p>\n

The veteran coach took over the job in the off-season and given his track record at both Manly and Canterbury, many believed the star-studded Gold Coast \ufeffroster would finally become a premiership force in 2024.<\/p>\n

After two convincing losses at the hands of the Dragons and Bulldogs, Hasler's side has been dealt a major injury blow in the form of Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, who will spend the remainder of the year on the sidelines with an ACL tear.<\/a><\/p>\n

The 24-year-old has been the leading man for the Titans since arriving at the club three years ago and will leave an enormous hole on and off the field.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Wide World Of Sports' QLDER<\/em><\/a>, rugby league great Darren Lockyer<\/a> claimed the side could overcome the loss of the Origin front-rower, but conceded they have failed to buy into Hasler's approach across their first two matches.<\/p>\n

"There's other guys there that can provide the heart and soul type of attitude [that Tino brings], like a Mo Fotuaika," Lockyer said.<\/p>\n

"They just haven't worked out how to play Des Hasler football yet. They just look really lost out there and maybe that's a new coach trying to implement his way of playing.<\/p>\n

"They've just got to keep it simple and get back to basics. They probably need to fix their defence up first and hope their attack starts to gel.<\/p>\n

"On both sides of the football, they are just not executing. I'm not too concerned about them yet \u2026 with a win or a better performance, they'll get a lot of confidence."<\/p>\n

Gold Coast have leaked 60 points in two games so far against bottom-four sides from last season, while crossing the stripe just once despite the presence of attacking weapons such as AJ Brimson and Alofi Khan-Pereira.<\/p>\n

The absence of David Fifita<\/a> has also been monumental for the \ufeffTitans early in their campaign – and that could become a more permanent fixture if things don't change.<\/p>\n

The second-rower, who remains sidelined with a pectoral injury, has a get-out clause in his contract up until round 10<\/a> that was installed after Hasler replaced Justin Holbrook, which could see the 24-year-old become a free agent at season's end.<\/p>\n

Fifita will likely be back in the next fortnight and according to Phil Gould<\/a>, he should make up somewhat for the loss of Fa'asuamaleaui.<\/p>\n

"I never believed one player should have that dramatic of an effect," he said on Wide World Of Sports' Six Tackles With Gus.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

"He is worth the big bucks and he is to them – Tino is a player who could go into any team and improve them. If you're going to spend that amount of money on one player and he's missing, it's a big hole that can't be filled.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"They've got Fifita to come back, they've got Mo Fotuaika who I've got a really huge opinion of \u2026 they've got some really good players in that side.<\/p>\n

"There's is a lot of other aspects to their game that they've got to get right."<\/p>\n
