E\ufeffddie McGuire<\/a> has revealed impending changes to the AFL<\/a>'s drug policy, which will see stricter punishments and year-round testing for players.<\/p>\n

In the wake of a bombshell allegation in federal parliament regarding cover-ups and off-the-books testing, there are calls for an overhaul to the existing system.<\/p>\n

Mick Malthouse has urged the AFL to come down harder<\/a> on players who test positive for illicit substances, while the legendary coach also condemned the response from chief executive Andrew Dillon on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em>, McGuire\ufeff revealed the likelihood of changes heading into the 2025 season as the league aims to clamp down on misconduct.<\/p>\n

"It is getting out of hand again," he said.<\/p>\n

"We want to be empathetic to anyone that has got mental health issues, but don't take the mickey. It's too dangerous for everyone … enough is enough.<\/p>\n

"They are going to bring in a punitive code. I believe that it will be done by June this year and I think it will come in next year.<\/p>\n

"They will still have WADA doing the matchday testing for everything, including performance-enhancing [drugs] – but they will also add [to it].<\/p>\n

"This will probably be the strongest drug code in sport."<\/p>\n

The revelations from McGuire come after federal MP Andrew Wilkie revealed claims from a former Melbourne Demons<\/a> doctor, alleging that off-the-books drug testing had been implemented at the club.<\/p>\n

Players were allegedly told to fake an injury in order to cheat the system. AFL boss Dillon responded on Wednesday, failing to deny the allegations and claiming it was "private medical information" between a doctor and player.<\/p>\n

McGuire said the consequences of a suspension from the AFL are far lighter than the real-world possibilities where drugs are concerned.<\/p>\n

"This is where it's dangerous – you get rubbed out for four weeks if somebody takes a photo of you, but you get nothing if you self-report," he said.<\/p>\n

"The opportunity to blackmail a player if you take a photo of them over the summer \u2026 you are dealing with organised crime.<\/p>\n
