The NFL<\/a> has followed the path of Australia's NRL<\/a> in moving to eliminate the controversial hip-drop tackle.<\/p>\n

NFL team owners on Tuesday unanimously approved a rule that bans players from using a swivel technique to tackle an opponent.<\/p>\n

A violation will result in a 15-yard penalty and could ultimately result in fines for players.<\/p>\n

In the NRL, players have been sin-binned and suspended in the last two years for bringing their weight down on the back of an opponent's legs.<\/p>\n

In some cases the style of tackle has resulted in serious injury to the ball-carrier.<\/p>\n

NFL executive Jeff Miller said the hip-drop tackle was used 230 times last season and resulted in 15 players missing time with injuries.<\/p>\n

The NFL Players Association has adamantly opposed the rule.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t get used very often, but when it is used, it\u2019s incredibly injurious to the runner,\u201d NFL Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe runner is purely defenceless. And I have heard defenders say it before, and I hear them, \u2018Hey, you\u2019re putting me in a really tough spot. You\u2019re saying I can\u2019t hit here. What do I do?\u2019 And my response has always been, \u2018Well, you can\u2019t do that, and that\u2019s just because the guy you\u2019re hitting is defenseless and has no way to protect himself'.<\/p>\n

"So we\u2019ve got to protect him and you\u2019ve got to come up with other ways, and you know what, they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

The league played a video during a news conference to show six specific plays in which the hip-drop tackle was used in games, with Bengals tight end Drew Sample, Cowboys running back Tony Pollard, Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd, Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith and Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill all being on the receiving end of the now-illegal hit.<\/p>\n

NFL teams will continue to receive videos showing illegal hits and ways to make tackles within the rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a new rule, so they\u2019ll not have seen it,\u201d McKay said about officiating the penalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is never practiced; nobody does this in practice. There\u2019s never a player that\u2019s going to use this tactic on a player on his own team in a practice so they\u2019re never going to see it.<\/p>\n

"They\u2019re only going to see it in the game. We will tell them, \u2019Listen, this a penalty on the books. You can call it. You got to see all three elements of what\u2019s going on here. You got to see him grab him. You got to see him control them. You got to see him swivel himself up in the air and you got to see him go unweighted. You don\u2019t see it, don\u2019t call it'.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to take all these tapes that you\u2019ve seen… we\u2019re going to take them all to the clubs and show them: this is what we don\u2019t want. This is what a foul looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n

A significant change to kick-offs wasn\u2019t presented for a vote but McKay said it\u2019s possible owners will consider it on Wednesday instead of waiting for the league meetings in May.<\/p>\n
