R\ufefface three of the Melbourne SuperSprint<\/a> started dramatically with Matthew Payne's Penrite Mustang \ufeffand Cameron Waters' Monster Energy Mustang tangling while jostling for the lead.<\/p>\n

Starting from pole position for the first time in his career, Payne was passed by Waters in the run down to turn one from the front row.<\/p>\n

Payne regained the lead on the second lap after a move up the inside at turn 11 but disaster soon struck when the pair came together at turn 14.<\/p>\n

As Payne covered a move from Waters the cars \ufeffbumped for position before both were sent tumbling into the wall.<\/p>\n

Replays showed Payne run deep because of the contact from Waters before drifting back to his left to try to turn into the corner losing track of Waters' position in the process and sending him into the wall.<\/p>\n

The force of the crash was enough to send Payne spinning into the barriers himself.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"That's ridiculous," said Mark Skaife in commentary for Fox Sports.<\/p>\n

Off-sider Neil Crompton added, "That was awkward in the extreme."\ufeff<\/p>\n

In his brand-new Mustang, \ufeffWaters was less than impressed with the contact, quickly clambering out of his car, which was perched up on its own wheel, to confront to Payne.<\/p>\n

"He's cranky," Crompton said in commentary for Fox Sports.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThere's going to be a bit of chat here."<\/p>\n

Waters yelled at Payne before slamming his passenger door shut in frustration and trudging off the track towards the pit lane.<\/p>\n

The incident triggered a safety car as both vehicles \ufeffwere heavily damaged in the accident. \ufeffHowever, both drivers were uninjured.<\/p>\n

Race control \ufeffsubsequently advised that no further action would be taken on the incident with neither driver wholly at fault for the crash.<\/p>\n

Speaking back in the Penrite garage, Payne explained that he moved over because he did not know Waters was there.<\/p>\n

"Just trying to race pretty fairly, I thought," he said.<\/p>\n

"I was trying to open up the last corner to give myself the best opportunity to get a good run onto the straight and he (Waters) was there.<\/p>\n

"I didn't even know he was there so it's unfortunate."<\/p>\n

Waters \ufeffrefuted Payne's claim that Payne did not see him coming.<\/p>\n

"I don't know if he didn't see I was there. If he didn't, that is pretty bad spatial awareness," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's really bad \u2014 a brand new car and it's in the wall. Obviously, he's got damage too. It's just shit."<\/p>\n

Asked if he surveyed the damage to the car after the crash, Waters replied: \ufeff"I was too busy trying to get to his door to talk to him".\n<\/p>\n

Broc Feeney was the eventual race winner after inheriting the lead from Payne in what became a time-certain 10-lap showdown.<\/p>\n

The earlier two races of the weekend were won by Red Bull Ampol Racing with Brok Feeney and Will Brown taking line honours.<\/p>\n
