Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> will start from the back row in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix<\/a> after his last-ditch flying lap time was deleted for exceeding track limits.<\/p>\n

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen<\/a> \ufeffposted the fastest time, claiming pole position from Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez.<\/p>\n

With a time of 1:15.915s, Verstappen becomes the first driver to hold an average speed of more than 250km\/h \ufeffacross a lap of the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit.<\/p>\n

Verstappen was 0.270 seconds quicker than Sainz \u2014 who is back in the car after undergoing surgery for appendicitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More than half-a-second also separated Verstappen from fifth position.<\/p>\n

Lando Norris was fourth-fastest for McLaren followed by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Australian Oscar Piastri in the other McLaren.<\/p>\n

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 were George Russell (Mercedes), Yuki Tsunoda (RB), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin).<\/p>\n

Ricciardo launched his flying \ufefflap as the clock ticked down on the opening session on Saturday.<\/p>\n

With the clutch lap, he catapulted himself out of the \ufeffrelegation zone.<\/p>\n

However, his time was soon struck out after race control deemed Ricciardo to have run wide off the exit of turn four.<\/p>\n

As a result, Ricciardo slumped to 18th position \u2014 his first exit in Q1 at his home GP.<\/p>\n

"It's very difficult to swallow but that's the way it is," RB team principal Laurent Mekies told Sky Sports F1.<\/p>\n

"Daniel was doing a very good job, probably his best lap so far and more than enough to get into Q2."<\/p>\n

Riccardo's RB teammate Yuki Tsunoda out-qualified his Australian teammate, progressing to Q3.<\/p>\n

The shocks continued with Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton eliminated in Q2.<\/p>\n

An error-riddled \ufefflap saw Hamilton bumped from the top-10 shootout by his teammate for his worst qualifying Down Under since 2010.<\/p>\n

Nico Hulkenberg, Pierre Gasly and Zhou Guanyu were eliminated following \ufeffthe first session before Alex Albon, Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen and Esteban Ocon's stints ended in Q2.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe starting grid could still be affected pending the outcome of outstanding stewards investigations concerning an incident between Perez and Hulkenberg, and Gasly crossing prematurely crossing the the line at the pit exit.<\/p>\n

The Australian Grand Prix gets underway at 3pm AEDT on \ufeffSunday.<\/p>\n
