The Broncos<\/a> have copped a huge blow, with coach Kevin Walters<\/a> confirming superstar prop Payne Haas<\/a> has been ruled out of Thursday night's grand final rematch against the Panthers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Haas succumbed to a knee injury which he picked up during the first half of Brisbane's 28-18 win over South Sydney<\/a>, with Xavier Willison to come in as his replacement.<\/p>\n

The Broncos had already scratched \ufeffhalfback and captain Adam Reynolds<\/a> from the blockbuster clash after he also suffered a knee injury against the Bunnies.<\/p>\n

Haas was named in the Broncos' team<\/a> to face the Panthers on Tuesday despite concerns \ufefffor his knee.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Wide World of Sports' QLDER<\/em><\/a> before news of Haas' omission broke, league legend Darren Lockyer<\/a> argued the prop's absence would be the bigger loss to the side than Reynolds.<\/p>\n

"\ufeff[If there's no Haas] that starts putting pressure on your halves because the go forward isn't there," he said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffTwo of your best players gone \u2014 [Haas is] a big out.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIf Payne doesn't play, it puts a lot more pressure on those halves creating something."<\/p>\n

Rugby league Immortal Wally Lewis added: "\ufeffPayne loves working off the halves and working on the edge of the ruck.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIf we get the opportunity to see how good of a performance he can produce when he's working off [the key halves pairing] early in the season then we'd be thrilled but I guess that's going to be pushed to the side for the moment."<\/p>\n

Jock Madden has been named as the replacement for Reynolds at halfback, with Lockyer backing him to slip in seamlessly.<\/p>\n

"I've been impressed with what \ufeffJock Madden has done when he has come in to fill in for Adam Reynolds," he said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt's an opportunity for him, he's up against the best halfback, if not the best player, in the game. So, it's a big test for him.<\/p>\n

"I don't think he gets overawed by that situation. I think he'll do his job.<\/p>\n

"Jock players a very\ufeff similar game to Adam, not with the experience that Adam has, but I don't think that the game plan would change one bit under Jock."<\/p>\n

Madden made \ufefffive appearances for the Broncos in 2023 after coming across from the Wests Tigers.<\/p>\n

Lockyer said he expected the Broncos' hookers to kick more during the grand final rematch.<\/p>\n

"The kicking game will be really important\ufeff and that's probably a task that's up to [Madden]," he said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI reckon the hookers might do a bit more kicking out of dummy-half given Adam is out."<\/p>\n

Panthers coach Ian Cleary has also ruled out prop James Fisher-Harris\ufeff for the game after he injured his shoulder during Penrith's 26-18 win over Parramatta<\/a> last Friday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
