T\ufeffhe Boomers<\/a>' hopes of consecutive Olympic<\/a> medals have been dealt a big blow with the draws for the group stage of the men's and women's basketball event at Paris 2024<\/a> revealed.<\/p>\n

The Olympic basketball draw for the Games in Paris was staged in Switzerland on Wednesday morning with the Boomers grouped with World Cup bronze medallists Canada as well as two contenders from upcoming qualifying tournaments.<\/p>\n

The Giannis Antetokounmpo led Greece is fighting it out with the Luka Doncic led Slovenia and several lesser credentialed nations for one of the other qualifying spots in the Boomers' group, while Olympic basketball powerhouse Spain is also likely to qualify into the Boomers' group.<\/p>\n

The Boomers' path to Olympic glory is \ufefflittered with NBA<\/a> stars, including Josh Giddey's Oklahoma City teammate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.<\/p>\n

The star guard led Canada to bronze at last year's World Cup \u2014 toppling the USA in the third-place playoff.<\/p>\n

Appearing at their first Olympic Games since Sydney 2000, Canada's side could also comprise NBA talents Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, Kelly Olynyk, Dillon Brooks, Luguentz Dort and Dwight Powell.<\/p>\n

Spain's team has a dominant record over Australia when it comes to major tournaments.<\/p>\n

The nation \ufeffwill host a FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament in July with Poland, Finland, Angola, Lebanon and the Bahamas fighting for a place in Group A of the Olympic draw.<\/p>\n

Antetokounmpo will also spearhead Greece's qualifying campaign when it hosts Slovenia, New Zealand, Egypt, Croatia and the Dominican Republic in another qualifying tournament.<\/p>\n

The Boomers triumphed over \ufeffSlovenia at Tokyo 2020 to claim their first piece of Olympic hardware.<\/p>\n

Ben Simmons had previously flagged his \ufeffinterest in representing the Boomers for the first time since 2013 but is now unavailable after undergoing back surgery<\/a> \u2014 his second procedure in three years for back issues.<\/p>\n

Boomers coach Brian Goorjian described the news as "horrific".<\/p>\n

The United States will take a star-studded squad to Paris with LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant all putting their hand up to play.<\/p>\n

They headline Group C\ufeff which also includes Serbia and NBA champion Nikola Jokic, South Sudan and the winner of the qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n

Hosts France will face World Cup champions Germany, Japan and the winner of the qualifying tournament in Latvia.<\/p>\n

In the women's draw, the Opals<\/a> \ufefffeature in a stacked Group B including Canada, France and Nigeria.<\/p>\n

The Opals were sent packing from Tokyo 2020 before the knockout stages after a disappointing quarter-finals loss to China.<\/p>\n

After the Opals qualified for their 10th Olympic Games, veteran Lauren Jackson<\/a>\ufeff said she would not be embarking on her fifth Olympics campaign, however the 42-year-old has since left the door open for a call-up.<\/p>\n

"It's a really personal decision," she told ABC Sport Daily of consulting her children on her final ruling.<\/p>\n

"I don't think I can say I'm going to play if they don't want me to. It's a really hard one."<\/p>\n
