Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire<\/a> has delivered a message to anyone wanting to change the AFL<\/a> decider to a best-of-three format, namely Swans<\/a> president Andrew Pridham<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last week, \ufeffPridham renewed calls for a best-of-three grand final series \u2014 arguing that the AFL is missing out on a $40 million revenue raiser by persisting with its current grand final arrangement.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy<\/em><\/a> podcast, McGuire found fault with the idea.<\/p>\n

"My old mate \ufeffAndrew Pridham [wants] three grand finals. He says, 'It's a no-brainer'," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

He then quipped: "It is if \ufeffyou have no brain."<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI went to the basketball on the weekend, which is a three-game final series, and five minutes into the last quarter everyone was talking about when players should start being rested and asking when the game will be over rather than it being a grand final with a drive to the finish," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"They can get away with it in basketball because that's what they do, but could you imagine three AFL grand finals?"<\/p>\n

To make his point, McGuire \ufeffmade an example of the 2010 drawn AFL grand final between Collingwood and St Kilda.<\/p>\n

"Now, correct me if I'm wrong but \ufeffdidn't everyone have a conniption in 2010 when we had a replayed grand final for the third time ever \u2014 for the third time ever," he said. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"That made the competition $25 million, that's what the AFL has said but I reckon it was more than that.<\/p>\n

"But also, the grand final \ufeffshould be played until you have a winner \u2014 now we've gone down the road of extra time.<\/p>\n

\"Sydney<\/p>\n

"Suddenly, we can't have a grand final with a replay \u2014 \ufefffor the three times it has happened in 125 years \u2014 but we can have three every year!"<\/p>\n

Geelong great Jimmy Bartel<\/a> agreed that multiple grand finals would dilute the spectacle of the annual decider while exhausting the players.<\/p>\n

"If you've got no concerns for the quality of the product, yeah, play three [grand finals]," he said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeff[The quality] would be absolutely trash.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt's the most physically but also mentally draining week of your life because it is the biggest moment you've built towards and you've played the game over in your head a million times.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWhen they win, the players get this adrenaline rush, but if you ask them a couple of days after they are absolutely out on their feet. They're exhausted, especially the losing team…"<\/p>\n

McGuire ultimately concluded \ufeffthat Pridham's proposal was a "trojan horse" to lure the AFL grand final away from the MCG.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
