By July next year, the Melbourne Rebels<\/a> might cease to exist. Nevertheless, Rugby Australia<\/a> is pushing forward with ticket sales for the clash between the Super Rugby Pacific<\/a> side and the British & Irish Lions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tickets for the 2025 tour went on sale on Monday, which will feature nine fixtures including three Tests between the Wallabies and the Lions.<\/p>\n

Each Australian side in Super Rugby Pacific will play the Lions, with the Rebels currently the last team in the schedule to face them on July 22, between the first and second Tests.<\/p>\n

That's despite financial turmoil at the Rebels, which has gone into administration and facing an uncertain future and speculation the team will be shuttered.<\/p>\n

Even if the Rebels are shut down, Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh said the match at Docklands Stadium will go ahead with contingency for another team.<\/p>\n

"While we are working through the Rebels situation, there will still be a fixture in Melbourne on that date," Waugh told AAP.<\/p>\n

"We've talked about a Pasifika game or potentially Australia A or the equivalent so there's different options but at the moment the plan is to have a Rebels team."<\/p>\n

The fate of the Rebels is still up in the air four rounds into the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season.<\/p>\n

Waugh said the governing body is racing to find a solution but admitted it was taking longer than he would like.<\/p>\n

"The sooner we can get to an outcome for 2025 and beyond the better for everyone so we're working through that," said Waugh.<\/p>\n

"Are we closer? Yes. Are we moving at the speed that we'd like to? Probably not so we need to accelerate that and not just for the fans and those engaged in the sport in Melbourne but for the players and the staff."<\/p>\n

Waugh was among a slew of high-profile rugby faces to front media on Monday, including newly-appointed head coach Joe Schmidt.<\/p>\n

Next year's British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia is the first since 2013 and it's expected 40,000 visitors from Europe will head Down Under.<\/p>\n

The team \u2013 made up of players from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales \u2013 will be led by incumbent Ireland head coach Andy Farrell.<\/p>\n
